Description

UNITED STATES PATENT 1 OFFICE.
FREDERICK DIETZ, OF NEVV YORK, .N. Y.
LANTERN-GLOBE HOLDER.
SPECIFICATIGN forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,288, dated January 22, 1884.
Application filed July 16, 1883. (No model.)
To aZZ whont it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK Drn'rz, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lantern-Globe Holders, of
which the following is a full, clear, and eX- 273,711, for animprovement in "lanterns.
. My invention has for its object the production of a device cheap and simple to construct, effective in operation, not liable to get p out of order, and which will securely hold the globe against displacement.
To attain this end my invention consists, essentially, in a wire ring of such size as to fit over the top of the globe, resting upon the bead thereon, said ring being provided upon each side, slightly back of the center, with a bend or coil' projecting upward vertically from the ring, and'at a point midway between said coils with a thumb-piece, either projecting through a slot in the cap or hell or extending outward from the ring. The two coils of the holder are secured to the under side of the bell, either upon the surface or in depressions prepared for their reception, or in I put the holder in shape again.
any desired manner. As heretofore constructed and arranged, holders of this class have consisted of a wire ring rigidly attached to the cap or plate at one side; but such an arrangement has been found to be defective, as when a globe a little longer than usual is employed the curved spring-at the back of the device will be bent upward, carrying the ring with it, elevating the front of said ring above the top of the globe, rendering the same insecure. When so bent, it is quite dificult to In my device these difficulties are overcome. The globe is rigidly held upon two sides, and a spring is formed in each direction to the right and left of the coils. If a larger globe than usual be employed, the coils readily compress, allowing for the extra length.
In the drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of my improved lantern-globe holder, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
A is the globe. and B is the deflector cap or bell located thereoverv and supported by central tube, 0.
.D is a wire ring, having coils D at each side, secured to the under side of bell B, as plainly indicated. The coils are slightly back of the center of the ring, in order to facilitate the placing of the globe in position.
E is the thumb-piece by which the holder is raised for the purpose of removing or inserting the globe. In Fig. lit is shown as extending upward through a slot in the bell;
but such an arrangement is not necessary, as there is no danger of displacement of the holder, and the slot may be dispensed with, the thumb-piece being turned outward and slightly downward, as shown in Fig. 2.
. Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is-
1. A lantern-globe holder consisting of a ring provided-with coils at each side, as set forth, said coils being attached to the cap or bell above the globe, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a lantern-globe holder of the character herein specified, ring D, having coils D at each side thereof, attached to the under side of cap or bell B, located above the globe, a thumb-piece, E, projecting from the ring, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
FREDERICK DIETZ.
