Description

E. w. BROWN. HEATING ATTACHMENTS FOR LAMP-CHIMNEYS.
Patented Nov. 28,1876.
Untaan STATES EDWIN W. BROWN, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND CHARLES F. MARSH, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN HEATING ATTACHMENTS FOR'LAMP-CHIMNEVS.
Specification formin gpart of Letters Patent No. 184,696, dated November 28, 1876; application filed October 27, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN W. BROWN, of the city and county of Worcester, andConrmonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful improvements in' devices for facilitating the heating of water and otherliquids by an ordinary kerosenelamp or gas; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a top or plan view of my improved device applied to the top of an ordinary kerosene-lamp chimney, only the upper part of the chimney being shown, as that is quite sufticient to illustrate my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section on line A B, Fig. 1, looking in the direction of arrow 1, Fig.1 of the drawings. Fig. 3 represents a vertical section on line B C, looking in the direction of arrow 2, Fig. 1 of the drawings; and Fig. 4 represents a vertical section of the top of an ordinary gas-chimney with my invention applied thereto, as will be hereafter explained.
To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe it more in detail.
In the drawings, the part marked A represents the outside wire rim or' frame of my improved device, the ends of which are twisted together to form the handle B. C C are wires, passed at right angles to each other over the center of the top of the wire rim A, andsecured by being bent or wound about the same, as seen at a, thus forming a stand for supporting the cup or dish in which the water or other liquid is to be heated.
The ends of wires C C are bent down, as shown at D, and then up and, down again, as shown at E, to iorm spring-holding fingers to be inserted into the chimney-top, as illustrated in Figs. 2, 3, and 4 of-the drawings, when water or other liquid is to be heated.
To prevent the wires C C from moving out of their proper reiative positions upon the rim or wire A, small inward bends b are made at the points where the wires C are wound around the rim or wire A, as fully indicated in Fig. l of the drawings. 1
In order that the top may be held in a perfectly secure and level position, and to guard against the device tipping to either side while in use, the lower portions E of spring-holding fingers D are made to spring apart when removed from the top of the chimney, as shown in dot-tedlines, Fig. 3 of the drawings, so
that their diameters shall be greater than the opening of any ordinary lamp or gas chimney top. 'The ends E of fingers D will, therefore, when inserted into the chimney-top, bear with considerable force against the inside of the chimney, and by the' pressure so produced, in combination with the bends F, which clamp the upper edge G of the chimney H, hold the top in a comparatively firm and secure manner.
The ends E of fingers D, as will be seen, are curved toward the center, for the purpose of facilitating their introduction into the chimney-top.
My invention may be applied not only to a round chimney-top havingstraight or curved sides, as represented in the drawings, but also to one having an elliptical or other formed top, by simply changing the form of the top of the device, and making the spring-holding fingers D conform to the shape of the chimney.
The parts A, B, C, D, and E may be made from any suitable wire or. other shaped metal, and the use of the device is so simple that a child can heat water or other liquid with it by means of the heat from an ordinary lamp or gas-burner.
Having described my improvement in devices for facilitating the heating of water and other liquids by the flame of an ordinary kerosene-lamp or gas-jet, what I claim therein as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The supporting-stand composed of the parts A, B, C, C, D, and E, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination, with the supportingrim A, of the spring-holding fingers, marked D, E, and F, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
EDWIN .W. BROWN. Witnesses:
EDWIN E. MOORE, ALBERT A. BARKER.
