To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, LORENZO Davis BOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attaching Tags to Mail and other Bags and Parcels; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

Figure l represents a tag secured to a sack by means of theloop and oord; and Fig. 2 represents an oval loop, one' of the several modifications thereof.

This invention is especially adapted to be used on mail and other sacks; and its object is to facilitate the rapid attachment and detachment of tags to and from sacks, and to save the great Waste which has heretofore been made in twine by reason of the cord securing the tag to the sack being severed when the tag is to be detached and consequently wasted.

The method of attaching and detaching the device is very simple. After the sack has been closed by the usual means, either the tag or ring, as may be most convenient, is slipped behind the draw rope or cord of the sack, then the tag is passed through the loop and drawn down, Where it will remain until it is passed through in the opposite direction for the pnrpose of detaching it from the sack.

The loop may be of any desired endless outline-as annular, Oval, square, or triangular- Without departing from the spirit of my inven tion. It may be of any metal or any suitable rigid material, metal being preferred.

The ends of the cord may be tied or wove together, or secured by light metal clamps, the first-named method being preferable, when a flat knot or one that will notinterfere with the transit of the tag is used. The pendent cord may be of a size and kind best adapted to the purpose, and elastic materia-l may be used with advantage.

The tag can be secured to sacks andother parcels by passing the tag through a loop in the suspensory cord; but this is objectionable, for the reason that when the cord or rope absorbs moisture,l as it must necessarily doin damp or rainy weather, or when the cord is of a hard texture, the tag cannot be detached with the same facility that it can when the metal loop is used, and as this device has the further advantage of being an entirety, it is more likely to be returned to the mailing-office and regarded as a part of the equipment of the Post-Oflice Department.

Tags thus constructed may be dressed by a draw-plane and a new address substituted thereon as readily as by the old method.

A single cord may be used, one end of which may be secured to the loop and the other to the tag. l

Having described my invention, what I de'- sire to secure by Letters Patent is- An attaching-tag or similar device consisting of a suitable tag proper, a cord, and rigid ring or loop` all connected and adapted for use substantially as shown anddeseribed.
