CARL nnuson, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
MANUFACTURE OF ENAMELED SHEET-METAL WARE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,051, dated January 15, 1884.
I Application filed June 22, 1883. (Modem To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CARL REUsoH, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Enameled Sheet-Metal I/Vare, of which the following is a specification.
In enameled sheet-metalwares, as heretofore manufactured, the body of the vessel was first stamped into proper shape from sheet-iron, then coated on its interior surface with enamel, after which the exterior surface was coated by elcctrodeposition with copper or other suitable metal. The thin exterior coating of copper was liable to wear off by use, so that the iron body was exposed, whereby the appearance, as well as the durability, of the vessel became impaired.
The object of this invention is to manufacture enameled sheet-metal ware in such a manner that a thick and substantial exterior protecting-layer of copper or other suitable metal is given to the sheet-iron body of said ware, whereby greater durability is obtained; and the invention consists of the method of making enameled sheet-metal vessels, which consists, first, in uniting a sheet of iron by rolling with a sheet of copper or other suitable metal; secondly, stamping or forming said sheets into the required hollow shape; and, finally, lining the interior surface of said articles with a suitable glaze or enamel. In this manner a vessel is produced that has an exterior coating of copper or other metal of considerable thickness and an interior protecting layer or coating of enamel.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view, and Fig. 2 a vertical transverse section, of a vessel made according to my improved method, and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section on a larger scale.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In carrying out my invention, sheetiron is first united by rolling it in any approved method, together with a layer of copper, brass,
metal ware is obtained that can be furnished.
at a comparatively low figure, as the body of the ware is composed of cheap material, while the exterior layer of copper imparts to it the appearance of solid copper-ware. The interior surface is protected by enamel, whereby said ware is especially adapted for culinary and similar purposes.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The process herein described of making enameled sheet-metal ware, which consists, first, in uniting a layer of sheet-iron with a layer of copper'or other suitable metal; secondly, stamping or forming said sheets into various hollow forms, with the copper or other metal at the outside; and, lastly, lining the interior surface of said sheet-iron body with a suitable glaze or enamel, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, an enameled sheet-metal vessel formed of a body of sheet-iron having an exterior covering-layer of copper or other suitable metal united thereto by rolling, and an interior protecting-coating of enamel or glaze, substantially as set forth. 7 I
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CARL REUSGH.
