GUARD FOR HARNESS=BUCKLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,846, dated January 8, 1884-..
Application filed September 4, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK G. HARRI- soN, a citizen of the United States. and aresident of Newburyport, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guards for Harness -Buckles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification,
- and 'in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved guard for harness-buckles, showing it attached to the straps. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of its two component parts detached from the straps and from each other. Fig: 3 is a top view, and Fig. 4 is alongitudinal sectional view through line x m in Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the gures.
My invention has relation to that class of guards for harness-buckles which consist of a plate covering the buckle and secured over the same by means of loops, one at each end of the plate, through which the strap passes, and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of such a guard, made in two pieces, one of which is secured to the tongue of the buckle, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed. In guards of this class difficulty is often experienced in getting the end of the strap out of the loop upon the outer end of the guard-plate for the purpose of unbuckling it or adjusting it in the buckle; and to this end I make the guard in two pieces, and by passing the perforated end of one of the pieces through a transverse slot in the other piece and inserting the said perforated end into the buckle, with the tongue passing through the perforation, I obtain a lock for the same which will prevent the tongue from becoming disengaged from its perforation on the strap, and the strap thus becoming unbuckled.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the strap passing through the buckle, and B the strap, to which the buckle 5o C is attached, which buckle has the usual tongue, D.
E is a slightly-bulged oblong plate, having a loop, F, at one end, through which the outer portion of strap A passes, and a transverse slot, G, at the other end.
H is the tongue-securing plate, adapted to' be inserted through the said transverse slot, and having a loop, I, at one end, through which the upper portion of the strap A passes, 6c and a perforation, J, through which the tongue of the buckle passes.
The guard is placed upon the strap in the following manner, viz: Strap A is rst inserted through the loop of the smaller plate, 6 5 the end of which is inserted into the transverse slot in the larger plate or guard-plate, whereupon the strap and the end of the locking-plate are inserted into the buckle and secured upon the tongue, which passes through 7o the strap and through the perforation in the locking-plate, and the outer end of the strap is now passed through the loop upon the guard-plate, which is swung upward until the strap has passed through the loop, when it is drawn down, covering the buckle. It will thus be seen that the perforated plate will secure the tongue of the buckle, preventing it from becoming disengaged, and that the guardplate will prevent objects from being caught 8o in the buckle.
I am aware that buckle-guards have been made consisting of a plate having loops or slots at both ends, through which the strap passes, and I do not wish to claim such construction, broadly; but
YVhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. A buckle-guard consisting of a bulged guard-plate having a loop at one end and a 9o transverse slot at the other end, and a perforated tongue-securing plate having a loop at one end, perforated at the other end, and adapted to be inserted through the slot in the guard-plate, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. The combination of two straps, a buckle,
a bulged guard-plate having a loop at one In testimony that I claim the foregoing;` as ancla tongue-securing plate having zt loop at l'ny own I have hereunto ufn'xed my signature one end, L perforation in the other end, and
end and a transverse slot at the other end, l

plate and into the buckle, tting with its perforation over the tongue of the buckle, as und l adapted to pass through the slot in the guurcl- FRANK G. HARRISON.
for the purpose shown and set forth.
