CONSTRUCTION OF PAOKING VBSSELS OR CANS. 7 No. 291,437. Patent-ed Jan. 1, 188.4.
n. PETERS. FhnIo-Lilhognphnr. Wmin mn. 11C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS WALSH, OF MILWAUKEE, WVISCONSIN.
CONSTRUCTION OF PACKING VESSELS OR CANS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 291,437, dated January 1, 1884.
1 Application filed November (5,1883. (No model.) I
w "VIilwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and
in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Construction of Packing Vessels or Cans; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to the construction of packing vessels or cans, and will be fully de scribed hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure l is a section of my improved can without its covering end, and
Fig. 2 is a likeview of'the same with its cover in place.
My invention applies, particularly, to that class of sheet-metal cans whichare tobe closed at one end by a paper or other non'metallic cover.
Referring to the drawings, Ais the body of the can, and a is the support for the cover, which support is first placed in position, and then secured by forming an outwardly-projecting bead about the body of the can, as at b, with inwardly-projecting beads (1 above and 12 below it. The cover 0 may now be slipped into place and secured by bending the edges (1 down upon it, and then the outside cover, 0, may be slipped over the end of the can. This cover 6 not only serves to protect the cover 0, which is usually of paper or wood, but also serves to close the can after the cover 0 has been destroyed in opening it. I prefer to secure the support a in place by the three beads b b b3,- but the bead b may be dispensed with without departing from the spirit of my invention. The support a is usually of wire.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a can or package, the combination of a support partially embedded in its body, with a cover suitably secured thereon, as set forth.
2. In a sheet-metal can, the wire a, in combination with the head I), for supporting the cover 0, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a sheet-metal can, the body A, having outside bead, b, supporting the wire a, in combination with the cover a and the lip cl, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in
the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses. I
FRANCIS A. IVALSH.
