SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 571,724, dated November 17, 1896.

Be it known that I, HENRY L. GATES, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of W'isconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jacketed Cans; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
IO My invention has for its object to simplify and cheapen the production of jacketed cans, especially when thebodies of the latter are tapered; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts r5 hereinafter set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a partly-sectional elevation of one form of a taper-body jacketed can constructed according to my invention; Fig. 2, a similar View of another form of such can, and Figs. 3 and at detail sectional views illustrating a joint that may be substituted for others shown in the preceding figures.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents a sheet-metal can-body; B, a woodveneer jacket for the body; O'D, sheet-metal jacket-retaining bands maintained in place by said body; E, an end piece joined to said body, and F a wooden shield arranged to oppose the end piece.
The can-bod y may be either straight or tapered; but my invention has especial value 3 5 in connection with tapered bodies because of the diiflculty experienced in forming the same with flanges of sufficient width to be utilized as a means for holding the jackets in place, it being particularly difficult, if not impossi- 40 ble, to turn such a flange from the small end of a tapered can-body without breaking the metal. As a substitute for a j acket-retaining flange at either end of the can-body I employ one of the above-mentioned sheet-metal retaining bands. This band embraces the jacket and is held in place by the can-body.
It is preferable to form some kind of a joint between the can-body and each of the jacketretaining bands, and it is also preferable to have these bands lap adjacent edges of the jacket. In order to stiffen each band, as well as to avoid injury to persons handling a package of which it forms a part, the exposed edge is preferably folded or curled.
The upper jacketretaining band is herein shown joined to the upper edge of the canbody as a result of acurling operation, and I have also shown that the lower jacket-retaining band I) may be either curled or seamed to the corresponding edge of said can-body.
The end piece E may be secured to the canbody in many ways, and if this end piece is to be protected by the wooden shield F, I prefor to provide it with a flange b, the latter to be joined to said can-body and curled or otherwise laid against the shield to maintain the latter in position.
In Fig. 1 I show the can-body and an endpiece flange I), joined by an inturned bead that is formed prior to an operation that may be employed to unite the can-body and adjacent jacket-retainin g band or to otherwise dispose said can-body so as to maintain said band in place. In Fig. 2 I show an end-piece flange Z) beaded outward in opposition to a union of the can-body and a jacket-retaining band in order to provide for a solder-joint, while in Figs. 3 and a I illustrate that said end-piece flange may be folded and the fold c seamed to said can-body and jacket-retain- 8o ing band.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is
The combination of a sheet-metal can-body, 8 5 and end piece of like material provided with a depending intnrned flange having permanent union with the body and serving for the retention of a shield, together with sheetmetal bands each of which has an edge joined to said body but is spread away from the lat ter to embrace and confine a jacket.
