SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 290,319, dated December 18, 1883. Application filed November 3, 1881. (No model.)

A is a shield, made of any suitable non-absorbent or Water-proof fabric or material, out and made in saddle form. The upperback corner of said shield is lined with firm stiff cloth or material that renders it unyieldingto the form. Said shield fits the'lo'wer part of the body and lower limbs of the wearer, and is designed; to furnish aprotection to the garments of females wearing it during the menstrual period, and as a surgical garment for either sex.
13 is a waist-belt, made ofwebbing or any suitable material, andinstead offitting closely is made large enough so that the front and rear points droop and are arranged for attaching the straps Which support the aforesaid shield. In the back part of said waistband is inserted a cross-piece. of elastic webbing, (l, for the purpose of rendering the belt self-adjusting, convenient, and comfortable to the wearer.
To the lower corners of the shield are attached bands D D, madeof any suitable mathe wearer, and serve to hold and retain the 40 shield in place for the protection of the garinents..
To the front and rear upper corners of said shield are attached straps b, made of suitable elastic or partly-elastic material, and are supplied with suitable loops, rings, hooks, or eyelets for securing said shield to the waist-belt. Said straps also have branch elastic straps d d,provided with clasps, by which any desired appliance,E,may readily and conveniently be attached and detached for the use of the wearer. The said straps d d have clasps for securing said absorber, by which the same may be readily attached or detached for the convenience of easily removing, cleansing, and replacing the absorber.
The peculiar advantages of this device are I do not therefore claim, broadly, a bandage for this purpose; but
