WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT .OFFICE.
MoRRIs H. MARoUs, OF EDENBURG, ASSIGNOR, BY DIREor .AND. MESNE I ASSIGNMENTS, OF ONE-HALF TO LEOPOLD A. KATZ, 0F BRADDooK, PA.
SAM PLE-DUMMYI SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,188, dated December 11, 1883.
Application filed March 22, 1883.
To allwhom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MoRRIs H. MARCUS, of Edenburg, in the county of Clarion and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sample-Dummies, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to dummies for cloth or rolled goods in continuous or store use, as distinguished from silk or other similarlyfolded goods for window-show only, and which it has been proposed to exhibit by covering a.
dummy with a piece of the goods representing a bolt of the same.
The invention consists in a dummy for cloth or rolled goods, made of wood or other suitable material, with its body of the required shape of the roll of goods to be represented, and having reduced ends,on which are secured and mounted or wrapped pieces of selvage till a bulk is obtained equal to that of the body of the dummy, that, as also the mounted selvages on its ends, is covered by a piece of the goods, thus representing a solid roll of cloth or goods upon a block of the size of the exposedreduced ends of the dummy.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters. of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents a view in perspective of a sample-dummy of rolled goods in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same in a plane which is perpendicular to the thickness of the dummy; and Fig. 3, an end view of the dummy in its bare or uncovered condition.
A in the drawings indicates the body of the dummy, of oblong shape in direction of its length and of greater width than thickness, with its edges rounded, as at a a, and formed with narrow central reduced end portions, b b,
(No model.)
which is mounted upon each of said ends till,
the same comes up' to the level and corresponds with the size of the bodyA at its ends. Said body A and selvage wrappings B at its ends are then covered by one or more thicknesses of the cloth or goods 0 the covered dummy is designed to represent a sample of,
and the same secured in place by the usual straps, d d, or other fastenings. The covered dummy will then represent a solid roll of cloth or goods upon a block of the size of the reduced ends b b of the dummy. Y
A sample-dummy thus constructed will be found of great service to merchant tailors and other store-keepers, especially new beginners or those having but a limited amount of capital at command, inasmuch as' while they will have a large amount of samples in roll form to display which will attract customers, the expenseof carrying a heavy load of goods is avoided, and the loss in case of fire will be comparatively small.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a dummy for samples, the combination,
with the body A and its central reduced ends,
b b, of the selvages B B, secured to and mounted upon said ends, substantially as shown, and for the purposes herein set forth.
MORRIS H. MARCUS.
