SOLE AND UPPER PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,736, dated December 4;, 1883.

To all whom, it may concern Be it known that I, J OSEPH G. WHITTIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Attica, in the county of Fountain and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sole and Upper Protectors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved device for protecting the soles and uppers of boots and shoes; and it has for its objects to provide an article that may be easily applied to the boot or shoe while it is being made, and which will hold firmly in place, as more fully hereinafter specified. These objects I attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which v Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved device, and Fig. 2 a transverse sectional view of the same.
The letter A indicates a strip of metal of a shape corresponding to the outline of the front portion and sides of the sole of a boot or shoe. The said strip may be cast or stamped up out of sheet metal, and is formed with a flange, a, to set around the sole, as indicated, and a band, I), to set around the edge of the upper to protect the same.
The letter 0 indicates a horizontal flange extending around the inside of the strip, at the junction of the band and flange above mentioned. The flange at its edges is provided with upwardly and downwardly extending spikes d, and also with short horizontal arms 6, which are provided with similar spikes, the object of which is to securely fasten the article between the insole and outer sole of the boot or shoe. The flange at the toe portion is also provided with a series of upright spikes, f, which assist in holding the article in place.

As an improved article of manufacture, a protector for boots and shoes, consisting of a strip of metal shaped to correspond with the outline of the sole, and having a band to protect the upper, a flange to protect the sole, and a horizontal flange and arms having upwardly and downwardly turned spikes to be secured between the upper and sole, substantially as specified.
