SIGISMUN D M. MIOHEIJSOLLOF MILWAUKEE, WVISCONSIN.
TRUNK-TRAY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,549, dated December 4, 1883.
Application filed June 7,1883. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SIGISMUND M. MIonnL- soN, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of WVisconsin, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Trunk-Trays; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to means for sustaining one or more of the trays of a trunk upon the upturned front edge of the trunk-top during the operations of packing and unpacking, &c. 5 and it consists in certain improvements on the patent granted to me on May 29, 1883, and numbered 278,580, all as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of partof an open trunk, showingtheupper tray sustained by my invention upon the front edge of the trunk-top. Fig. 2 is an edge or end view of a tray and a sectional view of a trunktop, showing the operation of the supporting device. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the said supporting device detached from the tray;
and Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section on the line as so of Fig. 2, showing the manner in which the supporting device is secured to the trunk-tray.
.A is a trunk, of any ordinary construction, provided with a top, A, hinged thereto, and having trays B B. The trunk-top has a fiat front, a, level with the front of the trunk proper when closed, and a metal strip or valance A, surrounds the front and side edges of the top, so as to make a tight joint with the trunk when the top is closed.
0 represents the catch or supporting device. which is to be applied to the end or endsof each tray, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and then the inner end of the upper arm, 0, of the said catch is either upset or else fastened by a nut or rivet, c, as shown in Fig. 4. There may be only one of these catches employed at either end of the trunk-tray, or one at each end, and the catches are exactly alike, except, of course, as they are designed, preferably, to go on the outside of the tray end, their upper arms, 0,
when two are thus employed, would point in opposite directions. If desired, these catches may be applied to the inner surfaces of the tray ends, andin such case the bottom of the tray would be cut through or made open near the ends to allow the hook c of the catch to pass through.
attachment of my said patented catch; and
my present improvement is designed to obviate these objections and to furnish an equally secure tray-support in such cases. The hook c of my present catch receives the valance A of the trunk-top, just as before, and the tray is firmly supported upon the upturned front edge of the trunk-top, and by reason of the springlike nature of said hook 0 .part of the top a itself, as well as the valance A is received by the hook, and thus the tray is held even more firmly than with the patented catch, on which my present device is an improvement. If it is desired to hold the tray only by the valance, then the lower part of the hook 0 may be shorter and its two arms nearer to gether, which would be desirable in certain cases, as then there would be less of the said hook projecting from beneath the tray.
Two or more trays or trunk-boxes may be supported on the trunk-top with my present device at the same time, just as described in my said patent.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with a trunk-tray, a catch, substantially as shown, secured to the end thereof, and adapted, when the tray is removed from the body of the trunk, to receive the valance or front edge of the trunk-top, so that the tray will be supported on the said front edge of the top when the latter is open, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, on this 1st day of June, 1883, in the presence of two witnesses.
SIGISMUND M. MIOHELSON.
