Description

I of this class.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFEIcE.
WILLIAM OTTMANN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133, 17 5, dated November 26, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM OTTMANN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Carriages 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawlug- Figurel represents a side view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section of the detachable front in the plane at 00, Fig. 1.' Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the carriage when the front has been detached.
Similar-letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in a detachable front provided with flanges to be secured to the bottom of a carriage body, with braces to steady the top, and with a cover made so that it can be secured to one of the bows of said body, and that, when the front is attached to the body, a close carriage is obtained, while by removing said front the carriage is rendered open for use in fair and warm weather.
In the drawing, the letter A designates the body of a carriage or buggy provided with a back seat, B, and with a top, 0, which is supported by the bows D 1) in the manner usually practiced in the construction of carriages With this body I combine a front, E, which is secured in position by three screws, a b 0, one of which passes through a cross-bar, d,- while the others pass through flanges 6. (See Fig. 4..) The upper part of said front is steadied by braces f, which are secured in position by thumb-screws g. (See Fig. 1.) Said front is provided withwindows h, and with holes 1' for the reins, and its sides are furnished with doors j. To the upper part of my front is secured a top, F, which is attached to one of the bows D by buttons k, (see Fig. 3,) so that it can be readily detached if the front is to be removed.
If it is desired to detach my front, the screws a b c and the braces f are taken out, the top F is unbuttoned from the bow D, and the front can be readily removed.
By this arrangement I am enabled to close up a carriage or buggy, or to open the same, according to the state of the weather and of the climate in which said carriage is to be used, and my detachable front is so constructed that it takes but little time to attach or detach the same; and, furthermore, it is light and simple in construction, so that it can be readily handled, and that it does not add very much to the cost of the carriage.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
' A detachable front, provided with flanges to be secured to the bottom of a carriage-body, with braces to steady its top, and with a cover which is buttoned to one of the bows of a carriage-body, the whole being constructed substantially in the manner herein shown and described.
' This specification signed by me this 9th day of November, 1872.
WILLIAM OTTMANN. Witnesses:
W. HAUFF,
E. F. KASTENHUBER.
