Description
P. J'. AYRES.
\ BUGGY-IOP.'
No. 179,392. Patented July 4,1876.
UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PARLEY JABEZ AYRES, OF LINDSAY, CANADA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUGGY-TOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,392, dated July 4, 1876; application filed J une 1, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PARLEY J. AYRES, of Lindsay, in the county of Victoria, Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buggy-Tops, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked therton, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to the construction of buggy-tops, whereby the top may be readily removed from the seat when desired, and folded into a small compass for the purpose of being stored away; and it consists in making each of the bows or ribs composing the frame in two parts, united centrally by suitable ferrules, and attached to the bu ggy-seat by means of a tapered pin and socket, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
Figure 1 represents a front view of the seat with top attached. Fig. 2 is a side view,
showing the ribs in position to receive the cover, and also the method of attaching the top to seat; and Fig. 3 is a side'view with the top folded back.
A represents the seat, to which is secured, on each side, near the front edge, a socket, B, for the reception of the pin or tapered extremity of the socket-iron O on the end of the rear bow D, by means of which the cover-frame is secured to the seat. The socket O is attached rigidly to the rear bow, and is provided with a torward-projecting arm, 0, to which are pivoted the sockets G on the ends of the remaining bows D.
A jointed brace, F, is attached to the front and back ribs, in the usual manner, for the purpose of shifting the top. The ribs or bows are made in halves, united. at the top by means of suitable ferrules E, so that they may be easily taken apart and packed in a small compass, if desired. The cover is secured to the ribs with buttons, and is provided with an elasticband on each side, running parallel with the brace F, which serves to retain it firmly in position and keep the cover tight. When the cover is taken oh, the ribs or bows may be readily disconnected and removed from one carriage-seat to another with ease and expedition, or may be packed in a small space for transportation, thus furnishing a cheap, simple, and convenient removable top for buggies or carriages.
I claim as my invention- 1. The bows D 1), made in two parts, and centrally united by the ferrules E E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The frame composed of the bows D D, provided with the rigid bow-socket O, pivoted bow-sockets C, and tapering extremity or pin 12, in combination with the socket B, substantially as herein shown and described.
