CAR-COUPLING.
srncirrcnrionformm part. of Letters Patent No. 239,357, dated November 27,1883.
Application filed July 6, 1883. No model.)
Be it known that we, JOSEPH K. NYGE and lnwin CFHUNSICKER, both of Ski paek, in the county of Montgomery and State of Penn 5 sylvania, have invented a new and Improved Oar-Coupler, of which the following is a full,
clear, and exact description. r
l j The invention consists in a draw-head pro{ R VldQd with longitudinal slots in the sides and io bottom,1n which side slots across-bar'slides,
which has a bottom-guide projection passing into the bottom slot. I The ends of the crossf a piece project from the sides of the draw-head and are adapted to strike against the lower ends of bail-shaped frames pivoted on the hooks on the outer ends of the opposite draw heads, thereby coupling 13118111.
Reference is tobe had to the accompanying ".20 drawings, forming part of this specification, in
which similarletters of reference indicate corj responding parts in allthe figures.
Figure 1 shows two of our improved carcouplers in longitudinal elevation, parts be- T25 ing broken out and others shown in section.
I Fig. 2 is a plan viewof the same, parts being broken out and othersshown in section. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the slide in the" draw-head. Q a 3o surface and at its outer end with an upwardly wand slightly-backwardly projecting hook or I boss, B, which is slightly undercut on its rear edge. A bail-shaped orinverted U-shaped f351 frame, 0, is mounted, to swing on the projectinglends of a transverse rod or shaft-,D, in the draw-head, the shanks of theframe G be- I ingjeach provided a short distance from their The draw-head A is provided on its upper frames 0 are thrown up, as shown, in the lefthand draw-head of Fig. 1, and the ends 0 of the same will then push the cross-piece H for ward until it rests against the front ends of the slots F. The plate K will project from the front end of the draw-head. If then the draw-heads come together theplates K will be forced inward very suddenly, and will press the ends 0 of the frameC toward the inner end of draw-head very rapidly, and
will swing the bail-shaped frame 0 of one draw-head over the coupling hook or boss B of the other draw-head.
coupled automatically. The cars can be uncoupled by simply raising the frames 0.
We do not abandon or dedicate to the public any patentable feature set forth herein and not hereinafter claimed; but reserve the right i 3 to claim the same either in a reissue of any patent that may be granted upon this application or in other, applications for Letters .Iatent that we may make. l
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Let-.
ters Patent, is a 1. In a car-coupling, the combination, with the draw-head having the horn or hook B, and the sliding plate K, provided with the single cross-piece H, with its ends projecting The cars are thus,
.nd with a central longitudinal slot, G, in the through slots in the draw-head, and beyond the sides of the latter, of the bail or frame 0 pivoted to the sides of the draw-head and having ends 0 projecting beyond its pivot and adapted to be acted upon by the ends of the cross-piece H, as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the draw-head A, having a projection, B, and provided with side 5 bottom. A cross-piece, H, slides in theslots 3 F, which crosspiece is of such length that its. Q ends project beyond the sidesof the drawslots, 13, andabottom slot, G, of the cross-piece ends of the cross-piece H, substantially H, projectingthrough the slots F andfrom the herein shown and described.
sides of the draw-head, the bottom-guide pro- T jeetion, J 011 the cross-piece, the plate K se- 5 cured t0 the cross-piece, and 0f the bail- J shaped frame pivoted to the sides of the draw- Vitnesses:
head, and having its ends (1 extending be- JONAS S. KRAUSE,
yond its pivotal point and acted upon by the SOLOMON SNYDER.
