IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-COUPLING TOOLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 207,994, dated September 10, I878; application filed August 10, 1878.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HERVEY SULLINGs, of Kalamazoo, in the county of Kalamazoo and State of Michigan, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Oar-Couplin g Tools and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
The figure of the drawing is a representation of a front of my car-coupling tool.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a tool for use in coupling cars, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The annexed drawing, to which reference is made, fully illustrates my invention.
A represents a shaft or flat metal bar firmly secured in a handle, B; or said handle may be formed with the bar, in one piece, if desired. The end of the shaft or bar A is formed with a point, a, and similar points are made onopposite edges of the bar near the end, as shown. A circular hole, I), is'also made through the bar at the end, which completes the tool.
This tool is used in the following manner:

and held in any position desired until it enters the opposite draw-bar. As soon as this is done the tool is placed with the hole I) over the head of the pin, and the pin is straightened up and allowed to drop to its place.
With this tool all danger of injury to the brakeman while coupling the cars is entirely obviated.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I The shaft or bar A, formed with the points a and hole b, and provided with a handle, B, for the purpose herein set forth.
