WILLIAM M. INGE AND EDWARD P. WHEELER, OF CORINTH, MISS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,460, dated May 7, 1872.
To all whom it mayponcem:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM M. INGE and EDWARD P. WHEELER, of Corinth, county of Alcorn, State of Mississippi, have invented new and useful Improvements in Car- Oouplings and we do hereby declare the following to be an exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawin g and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification, in which Figures 1 and 2 represent the coupling, showing at Fig. 1 the coupling bolt or pin at rest, for the link of the opposite draw-head to connect with it. Fig. 3 shows afront view of the pin with its revolving or swinging foot.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction of the pin with a slot at its lower end, in which the foot revolves or swings on a pivot.
A represents the ordinary draw-head; B, the link for connecting the cars. 0, at Fig. 1, shows the pin with its footD resting upon the lower side of the draw-head A, so that when the link B enters the draw-head, shown at Fig. 1, for the purpose of coupling the cars, the foot D is pressed back and upward, and
.drops with the pin 0 through the link B and aperture H of the draw-head A, as shown at Fig. 2, and. the foot is turned upward and rests in the slot E; the foot working loosely upon a pivot, J, so that it operates easily and instantly up or down, or revolving through the slot E as the pin is raised or lowered, and places the foot D entirely out of the way of the link.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The construction of the pin 0, with its slot E and revolving or swinging foot D, as herein described, and for the purposes set forth.
