Description

H. J. BLAKESLEE.
Car Coupling.
Patented June 23, 1863."
n 8288. FKOYWLITNOGRAPUER. WASHINGYUN D c NITED STATES PATENT CFFIcE.
HOMER I. BLAKESLEE, OF CONCORD, PENNSYLVANIA.
IM PROVEMENT lN RAI LROAD-CAR. COU PLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 38,939, dated June 23, 1863.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HOMER I. BLAKESLEE, of Concord, in the county of Erie, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Bailroad-Car Coupling and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon.
AB represents the stock of my coupling. (See Figure 1, where my coupling is represented with all its parts adjusted in Working order.)
B is the opening, in which the link N enters.
E E is a sliding bolt, which slides freely through a collar, E. This collar turns on a bolt, i, which passes through the stock A.
K is an arm on the collar H, with a slot, 8, on its projecting end.
F is a bolt. The upper end is shaped somewhat like a letter Y and the lower end passes down through the stock into the opening B, and when the cars are coupled through the link N.
D is a bolt, which passes through the Y-end of the bolt F and the slot .9 in the arm K of the collar H, as shown at L, Fig. 1.
C is a slot in the stock A, in which the bolt D moves freely up and down.
Fig. 2 shows the sliding bolt E E, the collar H, the arm K, the slot 8, the coupling-bolt F, and the link N, as they would appear if the stock was removed so as to show their adjustment. The link N has a handle, 0, which passes in the stock M. W is a bolt, which passes through a hole, X, in the link N. The handleC serves to keep the link N in the proper position to enter the opening B in the stock A. Now, when the cars are brought together the linkN strikes the lower end of the sliding bolt E E, shoves it back and up through the collar H, which moves the arm K down and lets the bolt F drop through the link N, and the coupling is complete. It will be observed that this arrangement makes the coupling self-acting.
What I claim, as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows-to Wit: 1
The sliding bolt E E, the collar H, the fallin g bolt F, the link N, when the same are constructed as described, and in the aforesaid combination, for the purposes set forth.
HOMER I. BLAKESLEE.
