CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,669, dated June 23, 1885.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES E. MAZELIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the county of Fairfield and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Oar-Couplings; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention is an improvement in careouplings; and it consists in certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front view, Fig. 2 a side View, and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section, of my coupling. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the link. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the lever. Fig. 6 is adetail view of the coupling-pin.
The draw-head A is supported against bumping pressure by a spring, a,,arranged about as shown in Fig. 3. This draw-head is provided near its forward end with a keeper, B, disposed longitudinally of said draw-head, and a cross-bar, b, extends from the side or bottom of the car through this keeper, so as to support the front end of the draw-head. I provide this draw-head with a large flaring mouth, a, and it is provided with a slot or opening, of, through its upper side or wall, in position to receive and permit the movements of the coupling-pin presently described. The lower wall of the draw-head is provided in its inner face with a groove or recess forming the shoulder a against which bears the coupling-pin in the operation of the device. VVithin the draw-head I arrange spring-actuated keepers O C, which are arranged one on each side of the interior or bore of the draw-head and given a downward tension by their supporting-springs so they will bear on the opposite sides or arms of the link and hold the latter in the desired horizontal position. The coupling-pin D is pivoted at d within the slot a of the draw-head, and its lower end is movable against and away from the shoulder a in' the operation of the invention. This pin D is provided above its pivot with a slot, (1, which slot is elongated in approximately a direction at right angles to the length of the pin. In pivoting this pin D, I prefer to employ two supporting lugs or ears, E E, arranged one on each side of the slot a and perforated to receive the pivot of such couplingpin, as will be understood. The transverse shalt F is journaled, preferably, in brackets G G, secured on the end of the car and at a point above the draw head, as clearly shown. To this shaft I fix one end of the lever H, the other end of which is bifurcated and fits over the coupling-pin D, and is provided With a pin, h, which fits the slot d of said couplingpm.
By connecting the lever and the coupling pin by a detachable or changeable sectionsuch as is formed by the pin entering the slot cZI am able to properly operate the coupling-pin by means of the lever, both when the draw-head is forced inward, compressing its spring a, and when such draw-head is drawn outward, expanding such spring, as will be seen. The transverse shaft F is provided with suitable handles or arms, F, by which it may be rotated in order to operate the lever H. It is preferred to form the outer end of the lever with elongated slots h, and to arrange the pin h so it will move longitudinally in such slot h, as shown, as thereby the pin will adjust in the slot and rise in said slot when the lever is lowered, as shown in Fig. 2, when the coupling-pin is adjusted into its normal position. Manifestly, however, by loosely fitting the pin h in either the lever or the coupling-pin,
the slot h might be dispensed with.
In order to hold the lever in position to retain the coupling-pin in its desired coupled position I employ the bail-spring I, which extends across the front of the lever H, and is coiled at t on opposite sides of said lever, and is provided with extensions 2', which bear against the side of the car, as shown. This spring, it will be seen, operates to force the outer endof the lever H toward the ear and thereby adjust and hold the coupling-pin in the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The dotted lines in Fig. 3 indicate the operations and positions of the several parts in uncoupling. The link J is preferably formed with the solid center portion, J, and is provided at its ends with lateral ears or wings j. In operation, when the link is inserted in the draw-head the parts j engage the keepers O and pass under such keepers, which then rest on the arms or sides of the link. The parts J serve to properly guide the link into the draw-head and hold the link in such position that the keepers will properly press upon its arms. Ordinarily when draft is exerted on the link it will be drawn out to such a point that the lugs j will rest in advance of such keepers, as will be understood from Figs. 4 and 3.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
2. The combination, in a car-coupling, of the draw -head, the coupling-pin, a transverse shaft journaled above the draw-head, a lever secured to said shaft and connected with the coupling-pin, and a bail-spring passed across the front of the lever coiled on the transverse shaft on opposite sides of said lever and suitably secured, substantially as set forth.
8. Theimproved car-coupling, substantially as herein described, consisting of the drawhead, the coupling-pin pivoted thereto and provided above its pivot with a slot elongated in a direction at right angles to the length of the pin, the transverse shaft journaled above the draw-head, a lever secured to said shaft and provided at its opposite end with a pin or stud projected into the slot of the couplingpin, and the bail-spring passed across the lever coiled at its ends on the transverse shaft, and provided with bearing-extensions, substantially as set forth.
