UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. HOLMES, OF COUNCIL BLUFF S, IOWA.
CAR-COUPLING.
" SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 259,153, dated June 6, 1882.
Application filed March23,1882. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. HOLMES, of Council Bluffs, in the county of Pottawattamie, and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car- Oouplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification. y
This invention relates to certain improvements in car-couplers; and it has for its objects improved means whereby the link may be ad- 15 justed to enter the draw-heads without necessitating the entrance of the train-men between the approaching cars, and thus endangering their lives, as more fully hereinafter specified. These objects I attain by the devices and mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the draw-heads of two cars to be coupled and my link-adjusting device, and Fig. 2 a detached view of the link-adjustin g device.
TheletterAindicatesthe draw-heads, which are of the usual construction.
B designates a lever-frame fulcrumed at opposite sides of a transverse block, 0, located immediately above the draw-head on the end of the draw-bar or other convenient portion of the car. The said lever-frame is composed, preferably, of a bar of wrought metal, bent, as indicated, so as to form a support, E, for the link, and an inclined arm, F,against which the draw-head of an approaching car is adapted to hear so as to tripthe lever'when the cars meet.
' The letter G indicates the link, which is of the ordinary construction, and H and H the usual coupling-pins.
The operation of my invention is as follows The link is inserted in one of the draw-heads, as indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and the coupling-pin is inserted in the usual manner. The lever-frame is then elevated so as to hold the link in a horizontal position, so as to properly enter the draw-head of the opposite car. When the cars meet the inclined arm of the lever-frame is pressed downward by the drawhead of the opposite car, so as to force it out of the way, and the coupling-pin H is then dropped into. place. The short arms I of the lever-frame limit its upward movement and serve to render it conveniently adjustable to hold the link in a proper horizontal position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the draw-head, the bifurcated frame B, consisting of a bar of metal bent so as to form a support, E, for the link G, and inclined arm to guide the link to the drawhead, and the transverse block to which the frame is pivoted, the frame being provided with arms I to limit its movement, substantially asspecified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 13th day of March, 1882.
r G. V. HOLMES.
