SPECIICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,236, dated November 27, 1883.

Be it known that we, WILLIAM l?. DODGE, of Prospect, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, and JOHN CUMMINGs, Jr., of
Utica, in the County of Oneida and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Coat, of which the. following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of our invention is to provide a new and improved storni-coat provided with an inner lap or apron,which fully protects the front of the body and the front and sides of the legs from rain and wind driven against the body.
The invention consists in a coat provided with a lap or apron fastened to or made ir te` gral withyone edge of the front'opening, and adapted to be folded and bnttoned on the inner surface of that side to which it is faste ned, or to the other side of the coat after having been passed over the front ofthe body, thereby preventing the rain or snowbeing driven through the front opening from wetting the inner garments.` y
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciiication, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

The coat A is provided in the usual way with a row of buttons, a, on one side of the front opening, and a row of bntton-holes, b, on the other side. That side of the coat on which the buttons are fastened is extended or enlarged to form an inside lap, apron, or storniprotector, B, which is provided at its free edge with a series of button-holes, d, through which buttons h, on the inner surface ofthe side of the coat of which the lap is formed, can be passed. |The coat is also provided with buttons g on its inner surface at the opposite side of the coat. The above-described improvement can be applied on all kinds of coats, long and short, but is especially adapted for water-proof coats made 0I' rubber, oil-cloth, or other suitable material.
Ve do not abandon or dedicate to the public any patentable feature set forth herein and not hereinafter claimed, but reserve the right to claim the same either in a reissue of any patent that may be granted upon this applica tion or in any other application for Letters Patent that we may make.
We are aware that a ladys cloak has been provided with a Inuholder buttcned in front thereof, that a skirt-fly has been buttoned over the pocket of an overcoat, so as to prevent the access of water or snow, and that a lling-ily llas been stitched on the inside of coat and over the diseased lung; but
