`Nvt-En STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CONRAD D. VOLKMANN, OF NAPPANEE, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM F. PEDDYOORD, OF SAME PLACE.
PIPE-WRENCH.
SIPEGIISICA'llOhT,forming` part of Letters atent No. 289,188, dated November 27, 1883.
Application filed October 20, 1853. (No model.) Y
To all ZIJ/"tom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CONRAD D. VOLKMANN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Nappanee, -in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pipe-Vrenches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same. y
My invention relates to th at class of wrench es adapted to engage the surface of a round har of iron or pipe and to turn the same when ro- Jrated in one direction', but to disengage` itself and to turn free thereon when rotated in the other direction. Pipe-wrenches having one j aw provided with teeth opposed by a smooth fixed jaw are common; so, also, are wrenches having one fixed toothed jaw opposed' by amovable smooth jaw; but my invention consists in a toothed j aw of peculiar form opposed by two smooth movable jaws, as hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had toV the accompanying drawings, in which-d Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 is an edge view, of `my invention.
A represents the body or lever of my wrench, consisting of a bar of steel provided with a suitable handle at one end, and curved and provided with teeth n, pointing forward, at the other end. i
B B represent two hooks hung to the two sides of the lever A upon the bolt C, which passes through the three parts named. These hooks are independent of each other, each being free to rotate by itself upon the bolt. The form of their hooking-curves b b is such relative to curve a that, whether oneis swung far away from curve a., as at b, or near to it, as at b, the curves b b will act as hooks around a pipe which would fill the space between the hooks and the teeth a. Vhenplaced upon a pipe and moved in the direction indicated by the arrow d, the teeth will engage the pipe,
'cases where a single hook would fail.
causing it to slip in the hooks toward their outer end, and thus, advancing between the converging lines of the hooks and the teeth, the pipe directly comes to a point where it is firmly held, and theharder the lever is strained upon the more irmly will it hold the pipe. e represents 'another hole through lever A, in which bolt C may be'placed to allow the hooks 5o to engage a larger pipe. By means of the two hooks B being independent of each other, the wrench will adapt itself to engage crooked pipes and pipes flattened or roughened in many It may 5 5 also be placed with the teeth on a pipe directlyT against a shoulder formed by the pipe entering a T or other coupling, one ofthe hooks taking upon the pipe and the other upon thel coupling or hanging free, as shown. H
NVhile the hooks are thus adapted to adjust themselves to a variety of situations where a single hook would not serve. they always coact with each other and with the curve of teeth in holding a pipe. The instant the lever is turned backward the pipe is released, so that a pipe may be turned intermittently in one direction by a ratchet action of my pipe-wrench, and by reversing the wrench on the pipe` similar movement maybe given thereto in the 7o otherdirection.
Having thus described my invention, what l. claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters` Patent, is
, The lever A, provided with a handle at one end, curved at the other end, and teeth on the curved portion, in combination with two independent hooks pivoted to said lever, as i shown and described.
CONRAD D. VOLKMANN.
