Be it known that I, CONRAD D. VOLKMANN,

a citizen of the United States, residing at Nappanee, -in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pipe-Vrenches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same. y

My invention relates to th at class of wrench es adapted to engage the surface of a round har of iron or pipe and to turn the same when ro- Jrated in one direction', but to disengage` itself and to turn free thereon when rotated in the other direction. Pipe-wrenches having one j aw provided with teeth opposed by a smooth fixed jaw are common; so, also, are wrenches having one fixed toothed jaw opposed' by amovable smooth jaw; but my invention consists in a toothed j aw of peculiar form opposed by two smooth movable jaws, as hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had toV the accompanying drawings, in which-d Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 is an edge view, of `my invention.

A represents the body or lever of my wrench, consisting of a bar of steel provided with a suitable handle at one end, and curved and provided with teeth n, pointing forward, at the other end. i

B B represent two hooks hung to the two sides of the lever A upon the bolt C, which passes through the three parts named. These hooks are independent of each other, each being free to rotate by itself upon the bolt. The form of their hooking-curves b b is such relative to curve a that, whether oneis swung far away from curve a., as at b, or near to it, as at b, the curves b b will act as hooks around a pipe which would fill the space between the hooks and the teeth a. NVhile the hooks are thus adapted to adjust themselves to a variety of situations where a single hook would not serve. they always coact with each other and with the curve of teeth in holding a pipe. The instant the lever is turned backward the pipe is released, so that a pipe may be turned intermittently in one direction by a ratchet action of my pipe-wrench, and by reversing the wrench on the pipe` similar movement maybe given thereto in the 7o otherdirection.

Having thus described my invention, what l. claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters` Patent, is
