SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,072, dated November 27, 1883.
Y Application filed October 1'2, 18113. (No model.)
To LZZ whon it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR F. COY, of North Bennington, in the county of Bennington and State of Vermont, have invented certain Improvements in Driving-Reins, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, constitutes a specilication. Y I
This invention has for its object to provide thev driving-reins of harness with improved means for preventing their slipping through the hands of the driver when in use; and it consists inthe employment of a duplex strap or rim instead of a single strap, between which duplex parts are interposed hand-loops, as will hereinafter be more fully set forth.
The drawing fully explains the invention, which consists in making that part of an ordinary driving-rein which comes Within reach of and is grasped by the hand in two strips, B and C, and interposing between them, at convenient distances, hand-loops D and D. The loops D D may be either of leather, metal, or any other suitable material; but however made, they are fastened or secured, as atff, to both straps B and C.
The principal rein, A, may be made of a single strap of leather, split at its rear part forward up to the point e; or it may be made of two thin straps stitched or otherwise united, except where left separate for the insertion of the hand-loops D D.
rlhe above-described construction prevents the rein from gradually working through and out oi' the grip ofthe hand of the driver, and also affords means for the driver obtaining asure hold of the reins in cases of emergency.
I claim- A driving-rein, of which the hand or rear parts are composed of duplex straps having interposed between them hand-loops, substantially as described, to which said duplex straps are attached, for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereto subscribed my name, at North Bennington, Vermont, this 8th day of October, A. D. 1883.
OSCAR F. OOY.
l In presence of- FRANKLIN SCOTT, WTLLIs H. PmLLrrs.
