' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN H. GILMAN, OF MONTPELIER, VERMONT.
DRIVING-BIT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 281,991, dated July 24, 1883.
Application filed April 11, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, EDWIN H. GILMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montpelier, in the county of Washington and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Driving-Bit, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a two-bar drivingbit in which a small check-rein bit is attached to an ordinary. bit by being loosely held inrings within the mouth fastened to the larger bit.
The object of my invention is to provide a driving-bit that a horse cannot get his tongue over, that easily controls him, and. does not injure nor make the mouth sore.
The accompanying drawing is referred to and made a part of this specification. The drawing shows a two-bar bit with parts connected according to my invention.
In the drawing, A represents an ordinary bit; B, the check-rein bit; a a, small rings within the mouth, fastened to bit A, as shown, in which rings check-rein bit Bis loosely held. Z) b represent rings at the end of bit B, to which the check-reins are attached.
In using my invention, attach the driving: reins and the check-straps of the bridle to the large rings at the end of bit A. Attach the check-reins to the rings 12 b, at the ends of bit B. Any kind of a check-rein may be used stituting a small strap, which buckles into the end rings of bit B and passes over the nose.
The check-rein and nose-piece, when properly adjusted, present an attractive appear- 0 ance; while they serve to hold bit B in the roof of the horses mouth in an easy position, reir dering it impossible for the horse to get his tongue over the bit, which leads to many vices-such as driving on one rein, extending the tongue from the mouth, &c., and producing after a time an uncontrollable mouth. Connecting the bit-bars A and B with rings within the mouth permits free motion of both bits, which freedom and independent action accomplishes all that either bit accomplishes when used alone, or without being connected, and has all the power of a two-bar bit in controlling a fractious or runaway horse, and without injury to the horses mouth.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
An improved driving-bit, consisting of the large bit A and the small bar or bit B, loosely attached to bit A by rings, substantially as shown, whereby a free and independent movement of each bar or bit is secured, all substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses;
EDXVIN H. GILMAN.
