Be it known that I, OYRUs R. ROBINSON, of Concord, Merrimac county, New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Halters, of which the following is a specitication. y

My improvement relates' to a halter to be used for fastening a horse when harnessed without removing the headstall and as a substitute for a hitch-rein. The haltersk used for this purpose have been clumsy in construction and difficult of application, or else,like the Ordinary hitch-rein, insecure, from the fact that they depend on the strength of some portion of the harness not primarily designed for this purpose.

My invention consists in the combination of two strips of leather or other suitable material, fastened together with a ring or eye, D, and with a like ring or eye, G, at the free end of the shorter strap. The shorter ofthe two straps is made of the proper length to go round the horses neck sufficiently tight to hold him, and yet notso tightasto choke him. The ring or eye which joins the two parts is Ofsuch size that it will not pass through the one at the free end of the shorter piece, but will be stopped when drawn up to it. The longer strapis to tie to' a post, or it may be provided with a snapper-hook of a size to go through vthe ring and through a ring On the post and back and fasten to the eye at the free end ofthe shorter strap.

The method of using the halter is to throw the shorter end over the horses neck,pass the longer end through the ring on the free end of the shorter strap, pull it till the two rings are in contact, and then pass the longer end through the ring on the bits, where the hitch-rein isv usually fastened, and then tie to a post; or, if

provided with a snapper-hook, pass through a ring On the post Vand then catch on the ring `and the strain comes chiey on the horses neck, instead of at the ring on the bits.

Accompanying this speciiicatiou,and a part of it, are drawings showing the halter and its mode of construction, and the manner of its application to a harnessed horse.

Figure 2 shows the halter, A being the shorter and B the longer strap, D the ring or eye by which they are united, and C the ring or eye at the free end of the shorter strap. Fig. 1 shows the halter in use with B passed through C and D brought up to and touching C, and B passed through the ring at the bits and hanging down ready for use.

When not wanted for use, it may be folded in a small space andlaid behindthe cushion of the vehicle or under the seat. f

halter or bitching-strap consisting of the two straps A B and the two rings or eyes C D, the former being equal in size or larger than theY latter, connected and arranged as described,

and adaptedto be passed around the neck of the animal to be secured, and thence through the` bit-ring, as shown and described.
