' FILE-CAS E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,042, dated November 2'?, 1883.
Application inea March ua, ieee. (No model.)
To onli whom, t mail! concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY IV. VoL'rZ, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State ofy New York, have invented certain new and usefui Improvements on a File-Case; and I do hereby declare that the following description of my said invention, taken in connection with the accompanying sheet of drawings, forms a full, clear, and exact specific-ation, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My present invention has general reference to improvements on cabinets for valuable papers, documents, &c.; and itV consists, essentially, in the novel and peculiar combination of parts and details of construction. as heref inafter rst fully set forth and described, and then pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings already mentioned, which serve to illustrate my said invention more fully, Figure l is an elevation in perspective of my improved cabinet. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional elevation in line y y; of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional elevation in line x a; of Fig. 2. Fig. a is a similar view, illustrating the lid in an open position. Fig. 5 is a plan of a fragment of said lid. Fig. 6 is a plan of the locking device on the lid.
Like parts are designated by corresponding letters of reference in all the figures.
This invention' has reference to improvements on a document and paper iile for which Letters Patent of the United States were'recent-ly granted to me, and its object is to overcome several obj ections and drawbacks in the construction of said document and paper file.
A in the drawings represents a case of suitable construction and dimensions. In the present instance I have illustrated this casein the form or" a book, such shape being preferable to any other for many obvious reasons, although the external contour of said case is of little, if any, consequence. This case has the side A', a back, B', and a cover, door, or similar hinged part, B, a lock, L, with key K, being attached to said door in order to enable the secure closing of the cabinet. To the back B is hinged a lid, C, and within the case are a suitable number of longitudinal partitions, D, forming, in conjunction with divisionslats E, a number of compartments for the reception of the doom ments, papers, Src., to be filed within said case.
Vithin the compartments is provided a device, F, for regulating the depth of said compartments, consisting of two slats, F F, and two side pieces, as clearly shown in Figs. l and 3, said slat F being provided with a slot-hole, f, for the passage of the hooked portion g of an extractor, G, as shown in said Fig. l. This regulating device F is arranged to iit closely into the compartments mentioned, so that when placed into the same at any depth it Will ret-ain its position. l
On the lid C, I provide alocking device, H, consisting of a suitably constructed sliding catch, having the bolt h, spindle h', and a nose or projection, 0;, said spindle being constructed to turn and slide in a loop, c, secured to said lid G.
Back of the locking device H is a button, b, to lock the said locking device H in the following manner: Then the lid C is in a vertical or open position, the device H lies close to the said lid C. When said lid is turned down, the said device will retain its vertical position, Owing to its pendulumdike contour; but it will assume, with reference to the lid C, aposition at right angles to said lid, so that the bolt 7i vcan be slid into the aperture or recess d in the case, and thus lock the said lid, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.' To prevent the locking device from being moved backward, the button b is turnedback of the nose a, this part of the locking of the cabinet being performed when the door B is open.
It will be readily observed that, owing to the depth of the cabinet, the documents in the rear row of compartments cannot be inserted therein or removed there-from unless there is a suiiicient spaceabove the said compartments for that purpose. This would necessitate the construction of a cabinet much higher than necessary to properly hold the papers. It will therefore be readily seen that, onaccount of the introduction of the hinged lid C, I am enabled to reduce the height of the cabinet to that only necessary for the proper placing of the documents, their insertion and removal being facilitated by opening the lid C.
It will be further observed that, onacconnt of the introduction of the pendulum-like locking device'L II,-Which will automatically operate to move close to the lid C whenever the sisting, essentially, of the case A, having the compartments for the reception of said documents, the cover or door B, and the hinged lid C, said lid being provided With a pendent locking device, H, and one or more of the compartments with the adjustable bottom, substantially as described, for the object stated.
2. In paper-cabinets, an adjustable bottom for the compartments, consisting of a frame, F, composed of the slotted top rail, F', rail F, and suitable side pieces, as described, said frame being constructed to iit tightly into said compartment, and arranged to operate in conjunction With a detachable extractor, as and for the purpose stated.
In testimony that I laim the foregoing` as myinventionI have hereto set my hand in the i presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
ANTHONY IV. VOLTZ.
