GARPET STRETGHBR. Nq. 289,007. Patented Nov. 27, 1883.
WITNESSBS INVBNTOR aa, W W 'fm-14a ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT 'rrion JAMES LINDSAY, OF NEW YORK; N. Y.
CARPET-STRETCHER.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,007, dated Noirember 27, 1883.
Application filed October 15. 1883. (No model.)
To all, whom, it maty conoern: Be it known that I, Janne LinnsAY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improvenient in Oarpet-Stretchers,
of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a carpet-stretching device which can be cheaply manufactured, being very readily and conveniently applied to use, and which will insure an exceedingly firm grip upon the carpet during the operation of stretching the same.
My ,invention eomprises a novel combination of parts whereby this object is effectually seoured.
Figure 1 is a view showing the apparatus in the position prelilninary to grasping or gripping the carpet preparatory to stretching the same. Fig. 2is a similar view, showing the position of the parts while gripping the car' pet in the operation of stretching. Fig. 3 is an end view of the apparatus. Fg. 4 is a plan or top view thereof. i
A and B are two jaws, formed, respectively, upon the adj acent extremities of the levers C and 2D, which are pivoted together, as shown at cc. `The upperinost of these levers has in its rearmost arni the longitudinal horizontal slot b. The link E is pivoted at its lower end to the extreinity of the rearrnost arm of the lower lever, D, by means of a pivot, d,`the upper end of the said link passing astride of the rearinost' arm of the upper lever, C, with a suitably strong pin, c, passing through from side to side along and through the slot b. The ends of the pin c are projected laterally to a distance sufficient to have pivoted upon them the inner end of a draft-link, f, the pin being retained in position by being headed over at its extremities. The link E is so arranged that when pushed forward toward the jaws its upper end will be depressed, so that the pin c, Working on the lower side of the slot b, will depress the rearrnost arin of the upper lever, and consequently raise the upperone of the jaws. This movenient being reversed when the said link E is drawn backward, inasmuoh as the link when thus drawn baokward inoves toward a Vertical position, the pin c is caused to act on the upper side of the slot bin something after the manner of an inolined plane, thereby exerting very great force or power in moving the two jaws one toward the other, thereby enabling the two jaws to grip the carpet between them with very great securityr and tenacity.
G is a short pointed pike or staff, which is provided with a hook, g.
In applying the apparatus to use, the requisite portion of the earpet is placed between the jaws, and the latter then tightened upon the carpet, as hereinbefore explained. This done, the hook g of the pike G is hooked into the draft-link f and the point of the pike is thrust into the floor, so that by drawing backward upon the long arin or end thereof the 'requisite backward movenient of the link to grip the jaws upon the carpet is secured; which done, the further backward inovenient of the long arin of the pike causes the latter to act as a lever to draw the carpet tight by the backward action of the device gripping and holding the same. W'hen the carpet is strained to the requisite degree, the pike is held stationary and the oarpet tacked in the usual manner, whereupon a new grip upon another portion of the carpet maybe taken as the work proceeds.
It is to be observed that the two levers are to be constructed with suitablyY coinciden't lugs, through which the pivot a is passed to connect the same, as hereinbefore explained, and that the link Emay be either in one piece, provided with suitable lugs to pass astride of the adj acent rearinost ends of the two levers, or it may consist of two parallel portions-oneupon each side of the levers-and with the ends pivoted by the pivotA d to the rear end of lever D, the ends of the pivot (Z being headed over, the upper ends of said pieces being attached to the rear end of the lever C' by the pin c, passing through the slot b, the extreniities of said pin being headed over to retain the said ends of the pieoes in position.
What I claim as niy invention is-- The carpet-stretching device composed of the lever O, having the jaw A at one end and a slot, Z), at the other, the lever D, having the jaw B at one end and the pivot d at the other, the link E, pin c, and the draft-link f, all substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
