Description

H. W. BOWEN. 'GARPET .STRETG'HER.
Patented Nov. 13, 1883.-
N. PETERS. wmmmm n m Washmglun us.
. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
HORACE W. BOWEN, OF OORNING, NEW YORK.
- CARPET-STRETCH ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 288,301, dated Nov ember 13, 1883.
Application filed May 4,1883. (No model.) I
To a, whom it may concern? Be it known that I, H. W. BOWEN, acitizen of the United States of America, residing at Corning, inthe county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet-Stretchers, of
which the following is aspecific'ation, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawlugs.
My invention relates to an improvement in carpet-stretchers; and it consists in the peculiarly-constructed brush-block A, having recess a, for reception of wire brush B, and bevel B, in connection with handle-socket G and handle D, to enable the operator to throw his weight upon the device in the act of stretching the carpet, substantially as hereinafter more fully shown and described. 9
In the drawings, F'gure 1 is a side eleva tion. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on a linelongitudinal to thehandle, and Fig. 3 is a plan view.
The block A has formed therein the handlesocket (3-, for reception of handle D, and on its beveled end recess a, for reception of wire brush B. The recess a, wherein is secured the wire brush B, is, in connection with the beveled end of the block, formed at such an angle as to cause the bottom of the brush to occupy the same plane as that of the floor upon which the carpet is to be stretched. Brush B is formed of strips of suitable staple-shaped,
wire, projected through leather or elastic backing b, the backing being rigidly secured in recess a by any ordinary means. In the act of stretching the carpet the operator presses with his weight upon handle D, and the metallic points of the brush take hold in the carpet and press it forward in the required direction.
I am aware that carpet-stretchers consisting of a wire brush secured in a brush-block, the
block being provided with the usual handle,
.. Witnesses:
arenot, broadly, new, the same being shown in the patent of A. T. Michael and H. A. Dun- 4 can, dated July 1, 1873, No. 140,522, which I disclaim, as 'my carpet-stretcher is designed as an improvement on their invention.
I accomplish my improvement by beveling the lower end of block A, as shown, to make 5 it conform to the same plane as the floor whereon the carpet is to be stretched, and se curing in a recess provided at this point the wire brush B, in order that when the operators weight is pressed upon the handle the 5 points or teeth of the wire brush and the weight of the operator being thus concentrated upon a very small surface, the teeth are caused to take a firmer and more certain hold upon the carpet and at a point nearer the end 6 of the carpetwhere secured to the floor, the operation of stretching the carpet thus requiring less eXertiona great desideratum, in viewv of the fact that such articles are chiefly used by ladies. Thus economy in material is effect- 6 ed, and a carpet-stretcher in all respects better and more effective in operation is produced at a cost much less than has hitherto been accomplished.
'What I claim, ters Patent, is-
Asa new article of manufacture, a carpetstretcher consisting of block A, having recess a, for reception of wire brush B, and handle socket C, for reception of handle D, one end 3 of the block being beveled and its opposite end adapted to socket O, in connection with handle D, for concentrating the weight of the operator directly upon the small surface of brush D, substantially as shown and described. 5
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HORACE \V. BOWEN.
and desire to secure by Let- DAVID C. Molina, WM, 0. CAMPBELL.
