Be it known that I, MARY E. HrGGINs, of Cadillac, Wexford county, Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Underwaists, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to an nnderwaist for children, composed of two half-bodies, and capable of adjustment down its back and front to vary its size, and having combined with it hose or leggin supporters.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.

Figure 1 represents a view in perspective, as seen from the rear and as opened from its back, of a childs combination-waist embodying my invention; and Fig. 2 is a front view of the same closed.

A A indicate the two half-bodies, made of any suitable material, and having shoulder straps or pieces b b formed integral therewith. Each of these half-bodies A is composed of gored pieces a a, forming a seam, c, arranged to extend above the waist-line d, to provideV for the full or free play of the supporter attachments under the waist. Said halfbodies A A are connected in the rear, or the waist made adjustable down its back, by means of an independent strip or piece, B, united with the half-bodies by straps and buckles f g, or other suitable fastenings, and the front of the waist is similarly provided with an interposed strip or piece, C, united with the half-bodies A A by lacings hy I1, vor other adjustable connections. This front stri p or piece, C, is provided with 4a free or pendent tongue, D, on which is a button, e, for attachment of a skirt or other garment to the waist. This tongue serves to secure for the attached l SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 288,802, dated November 20, 1883.

Ehprovided with a metal loop or buckle, Z, atits lower end, for attachment to the hose. These` hose-supporters have free play within the half-bodies. Stitched also to the interior of each half-body A, at or about the waist-line d, is a simulated half-chemise, F, arranged to extend below either half-body A, the two pieces'.F forming an imitation chemise and constituting one of the elements of the combination waist or bodyT garment.

The invention is also^applicable, in part or in whole, to corsets orwaists for ladies.

`With respect to the hose-supporting flaps E, attached to the inside beneath the armhole, I would state that I do not claim this feature in this application, as I have made the same the subject of a claim in another application filed October 17, 1883.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The underwaist half-bodies A A, formed of gored pieces a a, connected by seams c, eX- tending above the waist-line, shoulder-straps b, the back piece, B, and the front piece, C,

provided with tongue D, said pieces B C being connected with the gored pieces, substantially as described.
