My present invention relates to improvements in that class of setting-instruments whichare designed for attaching buttons to.

fabrics or other materials by meansof a. metallic fastener or G011DCb1011 2t11d my niprovements consist, essentially, in providing the two jaws of the instrument with recesses of a novel construction for receiving and holding the button and metallic fastener during the operation of attaching the same to a fabric or material, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents aside elevation of a setting-instrw ment embodying my improvements; Fig. 2, a detail sectional view thereof; and Figs. 3 and 4 represent the manner of applying the button and fastener to a fabric therewith.

Similar letters of reference occurring on the several figures indicate like parts.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the upper and B the lower jaw of the setting-in-- strument, which is adapted to be operated by the handles 0 D, in the usual manner. In the upper surface of the lower jaw, B, of the said instrument is provided a half-spherical recess,

a, which is adapted toreceive the button-head d, as shown, while a smaller curved groove or die, I), is formed near the end of the said jaw, to receive and hold the lower end of a metallic fastener or connection, as fully shown in Fig. 2. The lower surface of the upper jaw, A, is also provided with a recess, a, and die b, which correspond in shape and location to the I recess and die in the lower jaw, B, an intermediate slot or groove, 0, connecting the recess a and die 2;, for the reception of the shank of the button when the two jaws are closed together. I

The construction of my invention being as described, it will be observed that in the operation of the same the metallic fastener used in connection therewith is first passed through the shank of the button, and the two parts thus connected are adjusted in the lower jaw of the instrument, the button-head d in the recess a and the lower part of the fastener in the die or groove 6, as fully shown in Fig. 2. The fabric or material is then folded or bent together at the point where the button is to be attached thereto, and then inserted between the two open prongs of the metallic fastener. New, by closing the two jaws of the instrument together, the prongs or points of the metallic fastener are forced through the said fabric or material until the ends of the prongs meet or overlap each other to form a circular or continuous fastening. The jaws being again opened, the fabric is withdrawn with the button and fastener attached thereto,

as shown in Fig. 3, and the folded or bent portion of the fabric being drawn out straight leaves the button and fastener in the proper position upon the same, as fully shown in Fig. 4.
