BUTTON-FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.,273,405, dated March 6, 1883.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PARKER H. SWEET, Jr., acitizen of the United States, residingat Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Fastenings; and I do declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description oftheinvention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to theletters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved button-fastener or metallic connection whereby buttons may be readily and firmly secured to fabrics in the simplest and best possible manner; and it consists, essentially,ofa staple-shaped connection having the downwardly-projecting points or prongs split vertically for a portion of their length and otherwise adapted for the purpose contemplated, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and specificallydesignated in the claims. r 1
In the accompanyingdrawings,Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved device; Fig. 2, a similar view of the same as attached to a button and fabric; Fig. 3, a perspective view of a modification, and Fig. 4 an end view of the same as attached to a button and fabric.

In carrying out my invention the stapleshaped connection A may be either formed of wire or cut from sheets of metal, as may be decmed'most preferable, the downwardly-projecting points or ends a of which are split ver tically for a portion of their length and the extreme lower ends beveled inwardly toward the center, as shown. The upper part of each point orprong, directly below the loop portion b, may be provided with a shoulder or collar, 0, formed solid with said fastener or connection, and which is adapted to rest upon the upper surface of the fabric or material to which the device is to be attached, to admit of the free play of the button within the loop portion,
as also to secure the device firmly to the fab- 5o ric, which is clamped or held between the said shoulder and the curved ends of the split prongs, as fully shown in Fig. 4. In place, however, of the said shoulder 0, I may use a suitable plate adapted to rest upon the upper 5 surface of the fabric, and through which the prongs pass previous to theirentering the fabric,'and clinching upon the under surface of the same.
In the operation of myinvention the staple- 6o shaped connection is passed through the shank, eye, or collet ofa button, and the two parts thus connected adjusted within a suitable setting-instrument, which is then operated to force the prongs of the fastener or connection down through the fabric or material to which the button is to be attached, and to split the points of said prongs and bend them in reverse directions, either upon or back into the under surface of the fabric, to firmly secure the button in place. The split ends, however, of the prongs may be curled around upon themselves after passing through the fabric, 9 and be headed or riveted upon the lower surface of the same, if deemed preferable.
Having thus described the construction and operation of my invention, I claim as new and usefulg V 1. As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described button-fastener, consisting of the staple A, formed with the split and beveled ends or prongs a, substantially as and forthe purpose specified. v
2. In a button-fastener, the metallic staple A, having split and beveled prongs a, and provided with the central collar or shoulder, c, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
