CARPET FASTENEB. No. 287,990. Patented Nov.- 6, 1883.
INVENTOR WVITNE'S Y /6T M6 (9. a/ lQ M Z70 ATTORNEYS.
; UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
CHARLES E. ALLEN, OF PUTNAM, CONNECTICUT.
CARPET-FASTENER.
. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 287,990, dated November 6, 1883.
Application filed August 15,1ssa (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. ALLEN, of
Putnam, in the county of Windham and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Holding Druggets, Mats, 850., of which the following is a'full, clear, and exact description.
The object of this invention is to provide a cheap and simple device by which druggets, mats, and other carpet-covers can be readily fastened down to their places, to prevent them from being caught by the toes or feet of persons passing over them; also, which. will not injure thecarpet nor be difficult to take up when the drugget or mat needs shaking.
The invention consists in a bent double pronged-and pointed wire fastening of novel construction, substantially as hereinafter described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 represents a view in perspective of my improved fastening; Fig. 2, a side view of the same, in dotted and full lines, in the course of being applied and as applied to hold a drugget down to its place on a carpet, said drugget, carpet, and floor on which the carpet rests being shown only in part and insection.
A is the drugget or mat holding device, of staple-like form in its general contour, having duplicate approximately-parallel prongs a a, sharpened or pointed at their separated ex tremities b b, and joined together at their opposite ends or head portion, a, of the device. The article is or may be made of a single piece of round or other suitably-shaped wire, bent to give it the staple-like form described, and further bent abruptly, as at d d, and gradually, as at e e, to give a depressed configuration to the main portions of the legs or prongs a a of the device, and so that its closed end or head portion 0 and opposite separated pointed por- ,45 tions, b I while parallel with one another, or
thereabout, stand at different elevationsfrom the depressed portions of the prongs a a, and the head part 0 projects farther 'or is at a greater elevation than the pointed port-ions b b. a
To apply the-fastener to hold down a drugget, B, on a carpet, C, which rests upon or portions in front, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2. Thus held, the pointed ends of the fastener are inserted into both the drugget B and carpet C until they about touch the floor D. The upper part of the device is then lowered backward and the fastener pressed forward or inward till the abrupt bends d in it come within a certain distance of entering the drugget and carpet. The thumb is then placed upon the back end of the fastener and a finger 6 upon the drugget at a distance a little beyond the pointed extremities b and the fastener pressed forward or inward the remaining distance. This brings the pointed ends up through the carpet, but not through the drugget, While the main or depressed portions of the prongs a a rest upon the floor beneath the carpet, and the head portion 0 of the fastener bears down on the drugget to hold it in place.
A drugget or mat fastening thus constructed 7 5 is not only readily inserted to hold the article it is designed to secure firmly to its place, but is also free from danger of tearing or injuring the carpet, and. may be quickly drawn out or removed whenever-it is necessary to take up 8c thedrugget or mat to shake and clean it.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As a new article of manufacture, the staplelike pointed-wire fastening device for drug 8 gets, mats, and other articles, crooked, as at d d and e 6, near its opposite ends, and with its closed or head portion 0 arranged to stand at a greater projection or elevation than its pointed end portions b b from the interme- 9c diate and depressed portions of the prongs, cm, of the fastening, substantially as specified. CHARLES E. ALLEN.
