SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 287,749, dated October 30, 1883. i Application filed July 28, 1882 (No modeli) h To all whom it may concern Be it known .that we, WILLIAM HENRY WHITE and HIRAM F. BUDDELL, both citizens of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Gar-Coupling, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention is a car-coupling constructed as fully described hereinafter, whereby the automatic and positive coupling together of cars is effected with celerity and dispatch.

The operation is as' follows: Either of the levers being swung in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 3, the shaft 0 is revolved, so as to elevate its arms F,which indirectly raise. the arm B by turning the sleeve B, the couplingpin A, by reason of the'chain-connection i, being elevated in consequence. When the coupling-pin is elevated, its shoulder 6 slides on the 7 pin 0, while-the rear portion of its extension 12 moves toward the bottom of the draw-head until the pin Nin the slot 0 prevents further movement. The pin can now remain in this position, if it is desired, until the coupling operation is to occur, when the thrust or shock of the entrance of the coupling-link will be sufficient to enable the' pin to resume its original position by gravity. When the arms F or the shaft 0 are elevated by the revolution of said shaft in raising the coupling-pin, the rods J are raised therewith, moving the levers K on their pivots, so as to depress the forward ends of said levers, and likewise the transverse bar G, which is thus prevented from presenting any obstruction to the entrance .or
withdrawal of'the link, as circumstances may require. a 7
It will be apparent that by swinging either of the levers in a reverse direction to that previously described the cross-bar G can be elevated in'a corresponding degree, this move ment and that previously described enabling the said bar G to be so adjusted as to guide theentrance of the link-coupling Q at any angle.
It will'also be obvious. that by forming the coupling-pin A with the central enlargement, I
a, the pin is materially strengthened in the line of the draft, and will better resist the strain in that direction than pins usually employed.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, in a car-coupling, of a shaft, C, turning in brackets 011 the car above the draw-head, having arms F, and a loose collar, B, turning on the shaft 0, and having arm 13, and cut away to bear on the arms F, and connected to the coupling-link by a chain, 73, and devices for effecting the rotation of the shaft 0, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in a car-coupling, of the shaft 0, turning in brackets on the car above the draw-head, having arms 13, and a loose collar, 13, turning thereon, and having an arm, B, connected to the wedge-shaped pin A, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, in a draw-head, of the shaft 0, turning in brackets on the car above the draw-head, and connected and arranged with devices when revolved to elevate the coupling-link, of rods J, connected to the centrally-pivoted levers K, which are connected with the ends of the bar G, playing in the slots f of the draw-head, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
