CAR-COUPLING.
. PBCIFICA'IION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,866, dated September 28, 1886.
Application iiled August 23, 1886.
T0.r a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middletown, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gar-Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in car-couplings, and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a car-coupling embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view showing the manner of coupling two cars together.
A represents the draw-head, which is closed at the bottom and sides, and the upper side of which is open. In the sides of the drawhead are made vertical slots B, which are con- A nected at their upper ends by horizontal slots C. On the lower side of the draw-head, at the front end thereof, is a box, D, adapted to receive the link of an ordinary pin-and-link coupling, and in the said box is a vertical opening, E, adapted to receive the usual coupling-pin. rIhe front lower side of the drawhead is inclined, as at F, thereby forming a shoulder, G.
H represents the draw-bar, which is provided at its inner end with projecting trunnions I,which enter the slots B. The said trun-A nions are flattened on opposite sides, whereby they are adapted to enter the slots C, which are narrower' than the slots B, and the flattened sides of the trunnions are arranged at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the draw-bar. rlhe draw-bar is provided at its outer end with a head, K, having converging inclines L on its upper and lower sides, thereby forming shoulders M. Immediately in rear ofthe head K is a transverse opening, N,which extends through the draw-bar. Near the center of the draw-bar, on the upper and lower sides thereof, are inclines O, to form shoulders I).
R represents a bail, which is pivoted to the drawbar, and to which is att-ached a chain,
Serial No. 211,656. (No model.)
by means of which the outer end of the drawbar may be raised or lowered.
The operation of my invention is as follows: In'order to couple two cars together provided with my form of car-coupling, the draw-bar of one car is withdrawn in the draw-head by raising the trunnions in the front vertical slots B, turning the draw-bar to a vertical position, so as to cause the trunnions to enter the'slots C, and then moving the trunnions rearwardly in the said slots until they reach the rear vertical slots B and drop therein. The head of-this draw-bar will then have its shoulders M directly in line with the shoulder G of the draw-head. When the cars come together, the inclined head of the opposite car will strike against the inclines F and L, thereby raising the head of the draw-bar, and permitting the head of the opposite draw-bar to enter the draw-head and cause its shoulders M to be engaged behind the shoulders G and M, as illustrated in Fig. 2, thus automatically coupling the cars together. In order to uncouple the cars it is only necessary to raise the outer end of one ofthe draw-bars. Another way to couple the cars is to permit both the draw-bars to project from the outer end of the draw-head, and when the cars come together the head of one draw-bar will pass under the other and become engaged by the shoulders G and l?, and the draw-bar on top will have its shoulders in engagementwith those of the under draw-bar.
lVhen a car provided with my form of coupling is to be coupled to a car by means of the usual pin-and-link coupling, this may be accomplished by directing the link into the box D and dropping the pin in the opening E, so as to engage the link, as will bc very readily understood.
Having thus described my invention, I claimy l. rlhe combination, ina car-coupling, of the draw-head, and the draw-bar pivoted therein and having the inclines L and O, thereby forming the shoulders M and P at the outer end and at the center of the draw-bar, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the draw-head having the incline F at its front end and the vertical slots Bin its sides connected byy the horizontal slots C, and the draw-bar having the trunnions adapted to enter the slots and pivot In testimony that I claim the foregoing as Y my own I have hereto affixed my signature in Io presence of two witnesses.
5 the inner end of the draw-bar to the drawy GEORGE F' WHITE head, the said draw-bar having the inclines L @Vtnessesz at its outer end, and the shoulders M, for the HENRY W. WIGGINs,
purpose set forth, substantially as described.
