Referring to the sind drawings by letter, A designates the body of a stock-car of the usual construction, and AB the drawhead secured to the bottonrthereof, at the end of the same. To the front end of thedraw-head, on the under side of the same, I secure a fender, C, which projects forward a suitable distance from the drawshead, as shown. This fender consists of a bar of any suit-able material,
preferably metal, having its sides converging to asharp edge at its front end. It is secured to the draw-head midway the sides thereof, and is adapted to engage against a similar fender on the coupled draw-head, and thereby turn the link into position to be engaged by the coupling-pin, as will hereinafter more fully appear. The rear end of the draw-head is inserted through and supported bya cross-bar, D, on the bottom of the car, and its extremity is provided with a circumferential iange, (Z, which engages against the rear side of this cross-bar, and thereby prevents the draw-head being drawn entirely from under the'car.
E E are a pair of coiled springs, which have their opposite ends secured to the cross-bar D and the upper and lower sides of 'the drawhead,as clearly shownin Fig. 1. These springs serve to press the draw-head forward and allow it to yield tothe 1blow given by an approaching draw head in the operation of coupling.

These coupling-pins are simultaneously withdrawn from the draw-head by means of an angle-lever, I, pivoted to the end of the car, and having one arm connected to the coupling-pins by a chain or rope, i', and its other end projecting through a keeper, J. A coiled spring, j, is arranged in rear of the anglelever I and bears against the same to hold it normally ina lowered position, whereby the pins will not be unduly lifted. l
The lower ends of the couplingpins are provided with the annular grooves n, which are engaged by the spring K, secured to the under side of the upper half of the draw-head when elevated, and thereby held against entire withdrawal Vfrom the draw-head and against premature dropping. The spring K consists of a central portion, k, coiled around a stud on the under side of the upper part of the draw-head, and the arms k extending therefrom in opposite directions, and provided at their ends with the loops k2. The armsk engage the grooves in the coupling-pins, and are released therefrom by means of a rock-shaft, L, act.-
This rock-shaft L is journaled in the under side of the upper part of the draw-head, and has the arms Z Zl at its opposite ends, the arm Z being in the path of the coupling-link and the arm Zbeing at right angles to the arm Z, and adapted to engage the loop 76' of the spring'K.`
The operation of my device is simple, and will be readily understood. When the drawheads are made to approach each other, the fenders C will engage and the draw-heads will be thrown slightly to one side in opposite directions, and the linkv of each draw-head frwill enter the opposite draw-head, and, striking against the arm Z of the rock-shaft L, will rotate the said shaft. rlhe rotation of the shaft causes the arm Z' to engage the loop k2 of the spring K and draw the said spring IOO backward out of engagement with the annular groove in the coupling-pin, which consequently falls through the link, and the eonpling is completed. To nneouple the ears, it is necessary only to lift the pins by means of the angle-lever I7 as will be readily understood.
Having thnsdeseribed my invention, what I claim, and desire to Secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
I. The Combination7 with the Coupling devices, of the anglerlever I, pivoted to the end of the ear and connected to said coupling devices7 and the sprngj, secured to the end of the ear and bearing on the anglelever, Substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the draw-head, of the spring K, Seenred therein, and having the arms in' arranged in the paths of the coupling- NACE EDVARDS.
