WILLIAM B. PRATT, OF RAHWAY, NEWV JERSEY.
SUSDPENDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 286,958, dated October 16, 1883.
l Application filed July 3, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM B. PRATT, of Rahway, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented anew and Improved Suspender, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved suspender, whereby the ends can easily be detached from the buckle, and the clothing will not be cut and torn by the said device.
The invention consists of the buckle provided in its inner side with a pocket having a vertical slot, in combination with the suspender-ends provided with a plate or button having a T-shaped shank attached thereto, so that it is necessary to turn it out of its normal position tooconnect it to the buckle, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
Reference is to be hadto the accompanying drawings, forming partof this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a rear view of part of a pair of suspenders provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a top end view of the'ring. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a modification of the same.
The bu ckle-plate A is provided with a cavity,
13,111 the lower part of its rear or inner sur face, which cavityis formed by pressing part of the metal of the plate out of the same, so that it will form a protuberance, B, on the front surface of the plate, which protuberance is provided witha longitudinal slot, 0. A ring, D, is provided with a short angular pintle, E; on the end of which a cross-piece, F, is
formed. The Suspender-ends G are fastened to the ring in the usual manner. If the ring D is to be held to the plate A, the ring is turned until the cross-piece F is parallel with the slot 0, and then the cross-piece is passed through the slot, so that the cross-piece will be in the cavity B. Then the ring is turned until the cross-piece extends across the slot and catches on the edges of the slot. The Suspender-ends will thus be held to the buckle, and can easily be detached by bringing the cross-piece F parallel with the slot 0 and then withdrawing it. The cross-piece iscontained entirely within the cavity and cannot project beyond the inner surface of the plate A, and cannot pain the, body or injure and tear the garments.
If desired, the pintle E can be fastened to a disk, H, and the pintle E, which then forms the shank of a button, is passed through or fastened to the upper ends of the suspenderends G. The pintle Eshould project from the ring D at about right angles. Then the ring will hang easily, and the pintle can turn easily in the slot 0 and move up or down, as may be necessary.
' Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a Suspender, the buckle provided in its inner side with a pocket having a vertical slot, in combination with the suspender-ends provided with a plate or button having a T-headed shank attached transversely thereto, so that it is necessary to turn it out of its normal poas and for the purpose set forth.

' sition to connect it to the buckle, substantially
