STOPPER FOR WIRE ROPE, &o.
No. 286,863. Patented Oct. 16, 1883.
WITNESSES: Mw mwo 6W8 W M UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EBEN M. STODDARD AND JOHN N. JOHNSON, OF NORFOLK, VIRGINIA.
'STOPPER FoR WIRE ROPE, aw.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 286,863, dated October 16, 1883,
(No model.)
To all 10700172, it may concern Be it known that we, EBEN M. STODDARD and Jonn N. JOHNSON, citizens of the United States, at present residing at Norfolk, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Stoppers for \Vire Rope, &c., of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, of which they are a part.
The object of our invention is to provide a stop which shall act automatically to prevent a bar, rod, or rope from moving in but one direction, but allow it to move freely in the other direction.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of our invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same. Figs. 8 and 4 are detail views of the various parts of the same.
Similar letters of reference refer to corresponding parts throughout the different views.
A is the body of the stop, provided on its upper face with four wings, a a e c, all cast in one piece with the body, by preference of oval form. The wings a a are centrally slotted through their entire length, having at their outer ends the shoulders M, forming abutments, for the purpose to be hereinafter de scribed. The wing e, at the side and midway between the ends of the wings a a, is slotted throughout its entire length and depth, the slot being continued through the body of the stop for the purpose of allowing the insertion or removal of the rope or rod from the stop, said 1 wing c, at its inner end, being grooved to receive the T-head of akeeper, O, which is fitted to the slot in the wing, and fastened therein by a bolt, H, that passes transversely through both the wing and the keeper.
On the side of wings a a opposite wing e is a solid wing, e, which serves the purpose of a strengthening-piece or brace.
The jaws B B are convexed on their adjacent faces and grooved, so as to conform to and embrace the rope or rod to be stopped; and
they are provided on their outer surfaces with knobs b b, for the purpose of manipulating the jaws when it is desired to disengage them from the rope or rod. The outer ends of the jaws are tapered to fit into and under the shoulders M M, for the purpose of holding them to their work.
The keeper 0 is inserted in the slot of wing e, and secured therein by the T-head and set screw or bolt H.
The operation of our invention is as follows: To attach the stop to the rope or rod, withdraw the set screw or bolt H, and this will allow the keeper to be removed, after which pass the rope or rod through the slot in wing 0 into the opening between the jaws B B. Then replace and fasten the keeper G. The jaws B B having free upward action, the rope or red can be readily drawn upward; but when the rope or rod has a downward draft, the outerends of are dragged inwardly, and thus forced to bite the rod or rope with a power proportioned to the downward draft upon said rod or rope.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The body A, provided with the slotted wings a a, in combination with the jaws B B, having convened inner edges longitudinally grooved, as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. In combination with the body A, having the slotted wings a a and jaws B B, the T- headed keeper (3, as and for the purposeherein set forth.
3. The body A, wings a a e, jaws B B, shoulders M M, and keeper 0, combined as and for the purpose specified.
EBEN M. STODDABD. JOHN N. JOHNSON. lVitnesses:
Gno. W. BATTBY, WILLIAM W. PERKINS.
