Description

Jan. 13, 1959 F. w. PARKER 2,868,464
TOGGLE CONTAINING JAW CRUSHER Filed Dec. 22. 1953 2 Sheet s-Sheet 1 Fig.1.
TOGGLE CONTAINING JAW CRUSHER Frederick William Parker, Leicester, England Application December 22, 1953, Serial No. 399,811
Claims priority, application Great Britain December 22, 1952 6 Claims. (Cl. 241-285) The present invention is concerned with machines for crushing rock, stone, brick or other material, these machines being of the kind comprising a pair of confronting jaws defining a downwardly-tapering gap between them through which the material to be broken up is fed, and is progressively crushed in its descent.
In particular the invention is concerned with toggle crushers, i. e. in which one of the crushing jaws is movable and is thrust towards the other and fixed jaw under the'control of at least one so-called toggle plate.
Hitherto such toggle plates have been mainly rectangular in shape and arranged with their longer edges fitted into corresponding grooves in a movable jaw stock (which carries the aforesaid movable jaw) and a backing member (for example a so-called groove block) respectively.
With such an arrangement, however, there is difficulty in ensuring that the grooves in the jaw stock and groove block are exactly parallel, and thus that the thrust on the jawstock is uniform over its complete width, so that the stresses and strains on the bearings and other parts of the machine are properly distributed.
In avoidance of this drawback the present invention provides for the use, in or for a toggle jaw crusher, of a toggle plate which is formed at one edge with a spherical or part-spherical head arranged to seat in a cupped seating in the crusher jaw or backing member, and at the other edge is formed to enter a longitudinal groove in the backing member or crusher jaw respectively.
Regarded from another aspect the invention provides for the use in a toggle jaw crusher of at least onetoggle plate exerting a thrust on the movable jaw stock, such toggle plate being made self-adjusting by the mounting of the same at one of its two thrust-exerting edges through a bearing comprising a spherical or part-spherical head on the plate received in a corresponding part-spherical seating in the member receiving the thrust frdm this edge.
Further, the present invention includes a toggle plate having at one thrust transmitting edge, a part-spherical head of greater diameter than the thickness of the plate and formed, along the opposite side with a rounded edge.
Thus there is provision for a form of universal move ment of the toggle plate relatively to the jaw stock or the backing member, whichever the case may be, to compensate for any possible relative maladjustment of these parts.
Preferably the head on the toggle plate will be located mid-way along the length of the latter, and it will conveniently have its part-spherical bearing face centred on a point in the central plane of the plate body.
Again, the head will advantageously be approximately hemi-spherical in shape, and will merge into the plate at its rear (nonspherical) side.
The toggle plate itself may be of various cross-sectional shapes, such as those previously known, e. g. double convex, concave-convex, and so on; conveniently, however, it is of simple flat section, with the edge thereof which 2,68,464 Patented Jan. 13, 1959 is received in a groove rounded about an axis in the central plane of the plate body.
In a suitable form, moreover, the toggle plate has a generally rectangular outline in shape but with one side elbowed outwards and carrying the part-spherical head at the apex of the elbow.
As is also conventional, the toggle plate will preferably be formed as a metal casting, and the head provided by the present invention will advantageously be an integral casting with the plate, the part-spherical face of the head thereafter being machined.
The toggle plate of this invention can be applied to different forms of toggle crushers, i. e. to the single-toggle type in which the jaw stock is directly movable by an eccentric mounting, and to the double-toggle type in which two toggle plates are used to give the desired movement to the jaw stock.
In such double-toggle jaw crushers the jaw stock is mounted for pivoting about a fixed axis and the thrust is imparted thereto from the arm of a separate pitman, swinging about an eccentric axis, through a toggle plate, whilst a second toggle plate is applied between the opposite side of this pitman arm and the groove block of the machine. In the latter, therefore, the toggle plate of this invention can be used as the front toggle plate (in which event the backing member will be the separate pitman arm and the spherical or part-spherical head can be applied against this arm or the jaw stock) and/ or as the rear toggle plate (where the backing member will be the rear side of the pitman arm or the grooved block).
Further, the invention is applicable to the case of a toggle plate arranged to produce either an upthrust or a downthrust on the jaw stock.
According to a further feature of this invention, however, the toggle plate can be made adjustable in. its efiective width, i. e. may have relatively-movable parts which are adjustable hydraulically, mechanically, or in other convenient fashion. This enables the usual adjustment of the groove block to be dispensed with.
The invention will now be described with reference to one form thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating the mounting of an improved toggle plate according to this invention in a toggle jaw crusher of known form,
Figure 2 shows the toggle plate in its thrust-mountings in the machine, these mountings being shown in section on the line IIII of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged end view of the toggle plate shown separately, and
Figure 4 is a section through the toggle plate seating in the groove block.
The machine illustrated in Figure 1 comprises a frame 1 carrying a cross shaft 2 providing an eccentric mounting and drive for a jaw stock 3 carrying the movable jaw 4 of the crusher.
A draw back rod 8 is connected on the rear of the jaw stock 3 and is subject to the pressure of a spring 9 to pull this jaw stock positively into engagement at all times with a toggle plate denoted ill. This latter is disposed across the machine from one side to the other of the jaw stock but has its main plane inclined to the horizontal so that, in effect, it exerts a continuous inclined up-thrust against the lower part of the jaw stock 3. At its opposite and rear end the toggle plate 10 bears against a groove block 11 which, conveniently, may be set in an adjustable position in the machine.
Hence, when the machine is in use, material to be crushed is fed into the tapered gap between the jaws 4 and 7 from the upper side and is progressively crushed, as it descends between these jaws, as a result of the 3 movement of the jaw 4 occasioned by the eccentric shaft 2 and controlled by the up-thrust exerted through the toggle plate 10.
In known forms of machine of this nature, the togglew plate is usually of rectangular shape in outline having its thrust-imparting edges received in longitudinal grooves respectively in the jaw stock and the backing provided by the groove block Ill, and it will be appreciated that very precise machining and setting is required to ensure that the toggle plate carries out its function correctly with the grooves receiving the upper and lower edges of the same exactly parallel. vided by this invention is, however, automatically selfadjusting.
Hence, the toggle plate 10 illustrated is a metal casting of generally fiat section apart from shallow, inset Hats 18, and of roughly rectangular outline in shape. One longitudinal edge of the plate is rounded as at 12, about an axis in the central plane of the plate body. This edge is received in a groove in the jaw stock 3 which has mounted therein, through a seating frame 13, a seating 14 of hard material, e. g. hardened steel, against which the rounded edge 12 of the toggle plate bears.
At its opposite edge the plate is elbowed, as indicated at 15, and a bearing head projects outwards from the The toggle plate pro-v apex of the elbow, i. e. mid-way along this edge. This I head is cast integrally with the plate and is in two parts, viz, afrusto-conical neck 16 and an outer hemispherical bearing face 17 which has a diameter considerably exceeding the thickness of the main body of the plate (see Figure l) and machined to provide it with a smooth finish. The face 17 is centered on a point in the central plane of the plate body.
The bearing face 17 is received calotte-fashion' in a cupped recess 19 of corresponding concave shape and size. in a seating 20 of Phosphor-bronze, gunmetal, or other antifriction material, mounted in the groove block 11. This seating is provided with channels, such as are' indicated at 21, for the supply of lubricating fluid to the surface of the recess 19.
What I claim is:

In a toggle jaw crusher comprising a base member supporting a movable jaw stock and a fixed jaw cooperating to crush material between them, at least one substantially triangular toggle plate having one edge fitted in a groove on the movable jaw stock and exerting a thrust thereon, and having at the apex of two of its sides a part-spherical head received in a conforming part-spherical seating mounted on said base member.
2. For a toggle jaw crusher, a toggle plate of'generally rectangular outline shape having one side elbowed outwards and having a part-spherical thrust-transmitting head projecting from the apex of the elbow and a rounded thrust-transmitting edge on the side of said toggle plate diametrically opposite to said head.
3. A multi-sided toggle plate comprising along one side a rounded edge adapted to fit Within a longitudinal groove having a rounded cross-sectional seat, and a part spherical head located diametrically opposite to said. edge, said toggle plate being shaped to transmit force betweenall of said edge to said head.
4. A multi-sided toggle plate comprising along one side a rounded edge adapted to fit within a longitudinal groove having a rounded cross-sectional seat, and a part spherical head located diametrically opposite to said edge, said toggle. plate being generally triangular and having the head at an apex of two sides.
5. A multi-sided toggle plate as claimed in claim 4 and'further comprising an enlarged force transmitting member extending perpendicularly from the middle of said rounded edge to the apex.
6. A toggle plate as. claimed in claim 4 wherein the part spherical head is of greater diameter than the thickness of the plate.
