SHEAR PIN FOR CRUSHING MACHINES Filed Dec. 6,` 1930 March 14, 1933.
Patented 14, 1533 UNITED sr-Arss PATENT' orales muur w. camion nos nem cnnrgonnm ruf non causante n Application mea recenter e, raso. semi no. scam.
My invention relates generally to yielding jaw crushing machines of the type disosed in m co-pendin application for U. S. Letters atent filed ay26, 1930, Serial No. 455,793 and the principal object of my invention is, to provide ina crushing machine of the type referred to a shear pin that functions as a factor of safety in the event that the crushing machine is subjected to danger of injury or breakage in the event that a piece of metal or other uncrushable material accidentally enters the space be-l tween the crushing jaws.
Further ob'ects of my invention are, to rovide simple and etlicient means for' efecting the shearing of a in at predetermined points in the event t at an uncrushable object passes into the machine between the crushing jaws thereof, further, to ar- 90 range on the shear pin a toggle thrust sleeve that serves as a bearing for the toggle link. or linlrsthat engage the pivoted or swinging jaw of the machine, further, to rovide means whereby the thrust Sleeve 1s adjustably mounted on the shear pin in order that new bearingmsurfaces may be presented to the toggle ks in the event of wear by the said links and the surface of the thrust sleeve and `further, to provide simple and eicient means for supporting the thrust sleeve and holding the same against rotation while serving as a thrust bearing for the toggle links.
v A further object of my invention is, to provide saddles for the support of thetoggle thrust sleeve on the frame of the crushing machine and which saddles are mounted so that they will by gravity, slide out of the frame of the machine in the event that the shear in is sheared as a result of an un- 4' crusha le object entering the machine whilev the same is in o ration. A further o ject of my invention is,` to provide a safety factor 1n the form of-a shear in for crushing machines that will effectu yV prevent distortion and breakage of the frame of the machine in the event that thecru `shing jaws encounter an uncrushable obct.' v 1th the foregoing 'and other objects in view, my inventlon in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts that will hereinafter he more fully described and clarmed and illuhstr'lated'in the accompanying awing 1n w c Fig. 1 is a vertical section taken through the center of a yielding jaw rock crushing machine and showinv the same equipped with a shear pin in accor ance with my mvention.
Fi 2 is an enlargedJ crosssection taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. i i
Fig. 3 is an' enlarged cross section of the shear pin and showing the end of the toggle link that engages' the end of the thrust sleeve on said pin. Y Referring by numerals to the accompanyingy drawing, which illustrates a practical embodiment of my invention, 10 designates the frame of a yielding jaw rock crushing machine, 1l the hopper-through which the material to be crus ed is fed into the machine, 12 the crushing jaw that is yieldingly resisted by spring cushion 13 and 14:, the
swinging jaw that .is actuated by means of an eccentrlc 15. l
Bearing against the upper rear portion of body 14 is the inner end of a toggle link 16.,
Formed in the rear wall of the frame of, the machine directly below the spring assembly that supports the upper portion of a jaw 14, is an opening 1'( and projecting inward- 80 1y and upwardly from the lower portion of this opening is an inclined plate 18 that forms a part of the crusher frame.
Arranged for sliding movement on this plate 18, are saddles 19 that support a toggle thrust sleeve 2O and the latter encloses the intermediate portion of a shear piu 21.
This shear pin is preferably formed of mild steel and thrust sleeve 2O is formed of aively hard metal, preferably treated f The ends of thrust sleeve 20 terminate immediatel adjacent to the inner faces of the side w s 10 of the main frame 10 and seated in -said side walls are shear pin bushof hardened metal that receive the en portions of the shear pin andthe inner ends ofthese bushings. abut the ends of the to le thrusts1eeve20. f
f e ends of shear pin 21Y project slightly 10 Y 'projecting ends are threaded on the sur 22 and said r the reception of nuts 23 and which latter, when tightened, bear directly against the outer ends of the thrust bushings.
Seated in and projecting from thrust sleeve beyond' the ends of the bushings O 20, adjacent to the side walls 10 are radially' disposed pins 24, certain of which pins pro ject into'recesses that are formed in the outer end of toggle/link 16 and other pins project downwardly into recesses that are formed in the saddle blocks 19.
The pins that project into the toggle link 16 function asphinge pins at the same time they retain the outer lower end of the toggle inl position against the periphery `of the thrust sleeve and those pins that project into the saddles 19, hold the toggle thrust sleeve against rotary movement.
As described, there are two sets of these pins 24 and each set com rises a lurality of pins, the same being r ially disposed and preferably spaced e ual distances a art. This arrangement ena les the thrust s eeve tobe rotated ashort distance so as to 'present a new bearing surface for the lower end of the toggle when one surface has become worn to an undesirable degree. v
Obviously to make this. adjustment of the thrust sleeve, it is necessary to remove one' of the nuts 13 and withdraw the shear pin and then rotate the thrust sleeve in one ydirec- 'tion or the other so as to bring a new bearing surface into position to engage the outer lower end of the toggle.
The end of the toggle that bears against the thrust sleeve is concave and its radius is slightly'greater than the radiusof the sleeve and, as a result of this construction, the tofrgle link while in operation, rolls Face of the thrust sleeve without sliding movement and-therefore no lubrication at this bearing is required.
In the event'that an uncrushable piece of material or a foreign object such as a dipper tooth enters the machine and passesV downwardly between the jaws thereof, and which action would ordinarily damage the crusher` to a considerable extent throu h breakage of parts anddistortion of the frame, the developmentof abnormal crushing strains produced as a result ofthe en agement of the jaws with the uncrushable o ject, will sheer the pin 21 on lines in the planes occupied by the abuttin .ends of sleeve 20 and the bushings 22. en such shearin place, the weight of the severe intermediate portion of the shear pin and the thrust sleeve, will causev the saddles 19 to slide by gravity, `downward over `the inclined plate 18 and these parts will dischar e through openings 17 in the wall of the rame.
`This shearing action of the pin 21 at predeterminedpoint's, is effective in preventing distortion of the frame in which the pin is action takesv `sheared it is a comparatively easy matter to install a new pin. y
It will be understood that the abuttingends of the, sleeve 20 and the` bushings 22 provide shearing elements that act under abnormal pressure to shear the pin 21 at points just inside the side walls of the machine frame and thus said frame is in no wise damaged by breakage or distortion. j
Thus it will be seen that I have provided a shear pin for yieldin jaw rock crushing machines that is relatively simple in construction, inexpensive of manufacture, capa ble of being rea'dil installed for use and very effective in per orming the functions for whlch it is intended.
It will be understood that-minor changes i'n the size, form and construction of the various parts of my improved yielding jaw rock crushing machine may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which is set forth in the appended claims.
