My invention relates generally to crushing machinery and more particularly to a crusher wherein a movable jaw is carried by the end of the short arm of a lever, which movable jaw is opposed by a relatively stationary jaw and the lever that carries the movable jaw being mount ed so that when the lever is swung upon its fulcrum to move the jaw carried thereby toward the fixed jaw, said movable jaw has in addition to said forward movement, a downward movement, that is highly effective in crushing the material that is delivered between the jaws.
This combined downward and forward movement of the movable crushing jaw is brought about by the location of the fulcrum for the lever relative to the body of said lever and the jaw carried by the forward end thereof.
The principal objects of my invention are, to generally improve upon and simplify the construction of existing crushing machines, to provide relatively simple and effective means for actuating the lever that carries the movable jaw, to provide a crushing machine of the type referred to that may be very economically operated in point of power requirements and further, to provide improved means for mounting the fixed and movable jaws in the frame of the machine.
Further objects of my invention are, to provide means for conveniently effecting the adjustment of the fixed jaw toward and away from the movable jaw and further, to provide a support for the fixed jaw which will automatically release said fixed jaw in the event that a metal object or a piece of uncrushable material enters the space between the jaws, thereby eliminating the possibility of injury or breakage of the essential parts of the crushing machine.
With the foregoing and other objects in view my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangements of parts that will be hereinafter more fully described and. claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a crushing machine constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a detail section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a detail section taken on the line 55 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the removable plates that are arranged at the sides of the crushing cavity.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment of my invention, Ill designates a frame that 5 is substantially rectangular in form and journaled in bearings l I on one end of said frame is a shaft I2, provided on its intermediate portions with an eccentric I3.
Mounted on said shaft outside the frame, are fly wheels I4 and one end of the shaft is extended in order to receive suitable driving connections.
Journaled in bearings I l on the underside of frame l0, near the center thereof, is a transverse. shaft l5, that is rigidly secured to the under side of a longitudinally disposed lever I6, and the end of the long arm of this lever extends beneath the shaft I2. 7
This shaft provides a fulcrum for the lever and it is located so that the entire lever is positioned in a plane above said fulcrum. Y
Encircling eccentric I3 is a sleeve ll and depending from the ends thereof are arms I8 that are positioned to the sides of lever I6.
A short horizontally disposed shaft I9 is carried by the lower ends of the arms I8 and said shaft being journaled in a bearing 20 that is formed on lever 56.
Rigidly fixed to the end of the short arm of lever I6, is an inclined plate 2! and removably positioned on the front face thereof, is the movable jaw 22 of the crusher. The face of this movable jaw is preferably corrugated and projecting rearwardly from the lower portion of jaw plate 22, through openings 23 in the lower portion of plate 2|, are lugs 24.
The upper edges of these lugs and the upper edges of the openings 23 are correspondingly inclined so as to cause plate 23 to move upwardly as it moves rearwardly toward plate 2|.
Passing through an opening 25 in the upper portion of plate 23, is a bolt 26 that passes through an opening 2! in plate 2| and the upper edge of the head portion of this bolt and the upper portion of opening 25 are corresondingly inclined so as to move plate 22 upwardly when the nut on said bolt is tightened. Brace plate 28 is arranged between the upper portion of fixed plate 2| and the body of lever H5.
The relative stationary jaw of the crusher is arranged between the jaw comprising plates 2| and 22 and said stationary jaw comprises a plate 29 and projecting outwardly from the upper portion of said plate are trunnions 30 that are journaled in bearings 3| on frame Hi. This plate 29 is inclined oppositely with respect to plate 2| so that the space between said plates narrows toward their lower ends and mounted on the inner face of plate 29, is a plate 32, the face of which may be corrugated if desired. Plates 22 and 32 are formed of relatively hard wear resisting metal.
Projecting from the upper portion of plate 32 are hook-shaped lugs 33 that engage over the upper end of plate 29 and the contacting faces on these lugs and plate 29 are correspondingly inclined so as to tend to draw plate 32 toward plate 29 as said plate 32 is moved downward.
Passing through an aperture 34 that is formed in the lower portion of plate 32 and through the aperture 35 in plate 29, is a bolt 36 and the lower edge of the head portion of this bolt and the lower edge of opening 34 are correspondingly inclined so as to tend to draw plate 32 downward when the nut on said bolt is tightened.
Projecting rearwardly from the lower portion of plate 29 adjacent to its side edges, are hooks 31, to which are connected retractile springs 38 and the opposite ends of these springs are connected to eye bolts 39 that pass through brackets 40 that depend from the adjacent end of frame l0. These springs tend to pull the lower end of the fixed jaw toward the adjacent end of the frame and the nuts 4| on the bolts 39 may be adjusted so as to vary the tension of springs 33.
Projecting from the end of frame I 0 to the rear of the fixed jaw comprising plates 29 and 32,
. is a bracket 42, through which passes a vertically disposed bolt 43 and mounted on the threaded lower end of said bolt is a nut 44, from the sides of which project short pins 45. These pins provide a support for a plate 46, that is connected to a second plate 41 by bolts 48 and the forward edge of plate 41 occupies a groove 49 that is formed on the rear face of the lower portion of plate 29.
The plates 46 and 41 provide a strut between the lower portion of the stationary jaw and the adjacent end of the frame of the machine and the bolts 48 that connect said plates, provide a factor of safety in that said bolts will shear in the event that a metal tool or other uncrushable object enters the crushing pocket between the jaws and this shearing of said bolts prevents breakage and injury to the crushing jaws or other parts of the machine.
The rear edge of plate 36 bears against lugs 59 that are formed on the adjacent face of the end wall of frame In, the faces of which lugs are inclined so that as the rear edge of plate 46 is drawn upwardly by manipulation of screw 43, the lower portions of the jaw comprising the plates 29 and 32, will be moved toward the lower portion of the movable jaw and thereby contract the space between the lower portions of the two jaws.
Suitably secured to the side walls of frame H3 at the sides of the crushing jaws 22 and 32, are face plates 5|, the adjacent inner edges of which are beveled and removably positioned between said inclined beveled edges, are cheek plates 52 that are positioned to the sides of the crushing pocket or spaced between the jaws. These cheek plates are made removable in order that when they become worn or unfit for service they may I3 and depending arms I8, the lever I6 is swung upon its fulcrum l5.
In practice I prefer to make the long arm of lever I5 at least twice the length of the short arm thereof, thereby obtaining a two to one leverage of the power imparted to the movable crushing jaw comprising the members 2! and 22.
As the lever is swung upon its fulcrum the movable crushing jaw is simultaneously moved toward and downwardly relative to the fixed jaw and such action is highly effective in producing the desired results.
The material to be crushed is fed into the substantially V-shaped space between the movable and fixed crushing jaws and the action of the movable jaw very rapidly crushes the material delivered into the crushing chamber until such material is reduced to such a size as to permit it to discharge between the lower ends of the crushing jaws.
The relatively stationary jaw maybe conveniently adjusted toward or away from the movable jaw by proper manipulation of bolt 43 and should the plates 22 and 32 become worn or unfit for service they may be readily removed from the plates 2| and 29 and replaced by new plates.
Among the important features of my invention are the mounting of the movable jaw of the crusher directly upon the short end of the lever with the fulcrum for the lever located in a plane below that occupied by said lever, together with the relative lengths of the long and short arms of said lever, for by such arrangements the movable jaw during its crushing action moves simultaneously toward and downward relative to the fixed jaw so as to exert great crushing stresses upon the material that is fed into the crushing space between the jaws.
Thus it will be seen that I have provided a lever jaw crusher that is relatively simple in construction, inexpensive of manufacture and very effective in performing the functions for which it is intended.
It will be understood that minor changes in the size, form and construction of the various parts of my improved lever jaw crusher may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which is set forth in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a lever jaw crusher, a fulcrumed lever, a jaw carried by the end of the short arm of said lever, a fixed jaw positioned in front of said lever carried jaw, a pair of plates for supporting the lower portion of the fixed jaw, a sheer pin connecting said plates and means for adjusting said fixed jaw toward or away from said lever carried law.
2. In a lever jaw crusher, a. lever having its fulcrum located wholly below the body of the lever, means for swinging said lever on its fulcrum, a crushing jaw rigidly mounted on the forward end of the short arm of said lever, a stationary jaw arranged in front of the jaw carried by the lever, a pair of plates arranged between the lower portion of said stationary jaw and a fixed part of the crusher, a sheer pin connecting said plates, an inclined bearing on the frame of the crusher for the outer end of one of said plates and means for raising the end of the plate that engages said inclined bearing.
3. In a lever jaw crusher, a frame, a lever fulcrumed in said frame, the fulcrum of said lever being located wholly below the body of the lever,
a crushing jaw rigidly mounted on the forward end of the short arm of said lever, means for swinging said lever on its fulcrum, a jaw pivotally mounted in the frame in front of the lever carried jaw, a retractile spring arranged between the lower portion of the swinging jaw and the frame of the crusher, a pair of plates arranged between the lower portion of the swinging jaw and the end of the frame, a shear pin connecting said plates, an inclined bearing on the frame for the end of one of said plates and means for raising said plates with respect to said inclined bearing. 5
