UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANKLIN A. SMITH, JR, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
METHOD OF ATTACHING BUTTONS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of. Letters Patent No. 286,740, dated October 16, 1883. Application filed May 5, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom. it may, concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN A. SMITH, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods of Attaching Buttons to Fabrics; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My present invention relates to an improved method or manner of attaching buttons to fabrics, shoes, or other articles of wear.
Hy invention consists, essentially, in pressing the eye or shank of the button against the leather or fabric, thereby temporarily forming in the fabric a groove or crease approximating a V-shaped form, (or the fabric may be folded around the button-eye to form the depression or crease,) after which a metallic fastener is inserted through both the said crease of the fabric and the button-eye, the ends of the fastener left projecting from each side of the creased fabric, all as will be more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents the leather or fabric about to be folded around the button-shank. Fig. 2 represents the same when folded in a V-shaped form, ready to receive a metallic fastener. Fig. 3 represents a fastener inserted through the crease or V-shaped groove of the fabric and button-shank. Fig. 4 represents a form of securing the fastener to the fabric.
This my present invention relates particularly to the method of attaching buttons to fabrics, rather than to the means employed therefor. The latter I have more fully described and claimed in another pending application in the United States Patent Office.
Referring again to the drawings, to more 45 definitely describe my improved method of attaching buttons to shoes, &c., A represents the leather or fabric, to which the button B, having a shank, b, is to be secured by the fastener c, as follows: The button B, with its shank 1) depending, is held by suitable means and pressed against the fabric A; or, if deemed preferable, the fabric is folded around the button-shank b, the object being, in either case, to crimp or crease the fabric to a V form, as shown at a, the button meanwhile being retained in the said crease, after which a metallic fastener, c, is inserted by suitable means both through the V fold or crease of the fabric and button-shank. The ends of said fastener are left projecting beyond the crease, at each side thereof, as shownin Fig. 3 at c 0, thus completing my invention. The fabric A and fastener c.1nay be made to assume the form shown in Fig. 4, if deemed essential, although I do not claim any form of clinching herewith but 7 What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-' The herein-described method of attaching buttons (havingashank or eye) to fabrics, which consists in pressing the shank of the button against the fabric or folding the fabric around the button, thereby creasing the fabric in a V- shaped form, after which a metallic fastener 7 is inserted through the said crease of the fabric and. the button-eye, the ends of said fastener being leftprojecting beyond the crease, on each side thereof, substantially as shown and set forth.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANKLIN A. SMITH, a.
W'itnesses:
GEo. A. MUMFORD, H. A. TALBOT.
