SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 278,266, dated May 22, 1883.

I 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEo. W. PRENTICE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My present invention relates to a. new and novel fastening for attaching buttons to fabrics; and it consists, essentially, of a metallic blank, one end of which is of an arrow-head shape, the other end thereof being made flat and broad, said ends being further provided with inwardly-projecting spurs, the intermediate portion of the fastener, between the ends, consisting of a narrow strip, which forms the loop for holding the button-eye.

My improved button-fastener'is also adapted to be self-penetrating.

In the accompanying drawings, made enlarged, Figure 1 represents myinvention ready for use. Fig. 2 represents a button having its eye placed in a depression or crease in the fabric, and also showing the fastener inserted through the fabric and button-eye. Fig. 3 represents the fastener when attached complete, and being retained in position in the fabricby theinwardly-projecting holding-spurs. Fig. 4 shows a modification of my improved fastener.

The following'is a more detailed description of my invention.

A represents the completed fastener, provided at one end with the arrow-shaped point a, the other end of the fastener being made broad and flat at a, the two ends thereof connected by the intermediate narrow strip, a

which latter is made slightly convex to form a shallow loop for the button-eye. At a! of the fastener are formed four inwardly-projecting sharpened spurs for retaining the fastener in position in the fabric when attached thereto.

In the modified form of fastener represented in Fig. 4 the ends a thereof are made alike and flattened.

In the operation of attaching buttons to fabrics by means of myimproved fastener, I first crease or fold the fabric so that the eye of a button can be placed therein, thereby adaptingthe fabric to be pierced by the point a of the fastener, and also pass through the buttoneye and again through the fabric, as shown complete in Fig. 2, after which the fabric is straightened out or flattened, which latter operation draws the loop up farther through the fabric, and at the same time allows the spurs a to penetrate or embed themselvesinto said fabric on eachside of the button-eye, which tends to retain the fastener in position, thus completing the operation, as shown in Fig. 3.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The metallic button'fastener herein described, having one end arrow-shaped and the other end broad and fiat, each provided with inwardly-projecting spurs and an intermediate narrow and slightly-converted strip forming a. loop to receive the shank of the button, all substantially as shown and described.

2. A button-fastener consisting of the ends a a, having spurs a and an intermediate center loop, a all adapted for use substantially as shown and described.
