INVENTOR.

NiTED STAIES rrrca ATENT I SAAG F. BASSFORD AND MILES MAHAN, OF BUTTE OITY, MONTANA 'IERRITORY.
SNAP-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 285,956, dated ccober 2, 1883.
Application fiied August S2, 1883. (No modei.)
T0 aZZ w7wm it may concern:
Be it known that we, ISAAO F. Bassnonn and Mrrns MAI[AN, of Butte (3ity, in the county of Siiver Bow and Territory of Montana, have i11vented certain new and useful Improvements in Snap Hooks; and we do hereby dec]are that the following is a fui], ciear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skiiied in the art to Which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the aceompanying drawings, which form a part of this speeification, and in whieh Figure 1 is a perspective view of our i1nproved snap-hook; and Figs. 2, 3, 4, and are elevations of the same fromthree differont sides, the two ]atter figures showing it open and ciosed.
Similar ietters of reference indicate corre sponding parts in all the figures.
Our invention has relation to snap-hooks; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of a hook formed in a shape similar to the shape of the open link commoniy used in connecting two ends of a chain together, as hereinaiter more 1111] described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the'1ctter A indieates a fiat shank having a transverse slot or perforation, B, for the insertion and fastening of the eord, rope, strap, or chain, to the end of Which the hook is attached; and 0 indieates the rigid hook, which is integral With the shank and turned in a plane at aright ai1- gle to the plane of the shank. This hooked portion consists of a fiat body, preferably tri- :tnguiar in shape, and the hook proper, D, which forms a part of an ovai, the end of the hook being bent inward toward the body portion. The hinged hobk B is of the same shape as the rigid hook, and is hinged in a s1ot, F, in the upper end of the shank, its eurved point pointing in the opposite direction to the point of the rigid hook, and its inner end, inside the pin, upon whieh it is hinged, is pointed, and
bears against the inner sides of the free ends of two fiat springs, Gr and H, fastened at their inner ends upon the sides of the shank open a pin, I, passing through the samc, so that the springs ina v be turned to the sides From bean in g against the pointed end of t] le hingcd hook, the spring G bearing against the rear edge of the hook, fitting With its end in a notch or reoess, J, in the same, preventing it from being tiited too far back. The outside of the hinged hook is provided upon its body portion With a prqjecting biock, K, against the front edge of which the thumb of the person using the hook 1nay press in p ushing the hook open, admitting the ring or link upon which the hook is to be fastened, and the springs upon both sides Will force the hook closed when the pressure upon the block is rcleased.
If it is desired to have the hook open, the springs may be turncd to a side, which will rciease the hinged hook, allowing it to swing freely; and if the spring bcaring into the notch upon the rear edge of the hinged hook is pushed to the side the hook may be thrown wide open and held in that position, the other spring bearing gainst the end L of the hook, which is out off obiiquely, bearing, wlren closed, against the correspondingiy-beveled inner end of the siot F, which construction prevents the hook from being pressed too far forward by the spring bcaring against its rear edge.
It is obvious that this hook may be used for any purpose for which a snap-hook may be' used by making it of the necessary dimensions and strength, and by shaping the siot or perforation of a suitable shape for holding the strap, cord, rope, or chain to which it is to be attached.
Having thus desoribed our invention, we daim and desire to secure byLetters Patent of the United States 1.. A snap-hook consisting of a rigid hook having a shank adapted to be fastened to the objeet to be provided with the hook, and a hook hinged at its inner end to the rigid bock, having its hooked end pointing in the opposite direction to the rigid hook, having a notch in the rear edge of its inner end, and bearing with its inner end, inside its pivot-a1 point, against the free ends of two fiat springs fastened upon the shank of the rigid hook, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. The combination of the rigid hook hav,
ing a shank provided with a snitable slot or perforation, and bent in a plane ata right angle to the plane of the hook, and having its enter end cnrved toward its body portion, a
5 hinged hook hinged in a s1ot in the upper end of the shank of the rigid hook, having a bloc]; npon the outside of its body portion, having its outer end bent in the opposite direction to the rigid hook, having a notch npon the rear I0 edge of its inner portion, and bearing with the obliqnely-cut end of the same against the correspondingly-beveled inner end of the slot in the end of the shank, and two fiat springs bear ing with theirfree ends against the edges of 1 5 the inner end of the hinged hook, and fastened
