Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GIBBONS L. KELTY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
WINDOW-CURTAIN.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 28,585, dated June 5, 1860.
To all whom 'it may concer/n.:
Be it known that I, GIBBONS L. KELTY, of the city and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new .and useful Improvement in Lambrequins or Stiff Curtains for Vindows, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and clear description of the nature and objects of my said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein I have represented the stiff' curtains. or lambrequins to which my invention relates.
In fitting up curtains to windows it is often usual to hang a sti curtain or lambrequin across the head of the window. The same is represented at w, a, of accompanying drawing and it is attached to the lower edge of the cornice o; and separate curtains of lace or other material may or may not be used between this fixed curtain and the window sash. These fixed or standing lambrequins or curtains are made of various shapes and extend more or less down the sides of the windows. Heretofore these 1 fixed curtains or lambrequins have been made of damask or other woven fabrics of a costly nature, and have been stiffened with a lining of buckram or other material.
The nature of my said invention consists in making these lambrequins or fixed curtains of buckram or similar cheap and stiff material coated with flock the same being a new article of manufacture possessing both cheapness and beauty. I am enabled by this invention to furnish handsome lambrequins or fixed window curtains in various designs and colors, equaling in appearance very expensive damask at a very small cost which renders the possession of ornamental window curtains and head fixtures within the means of the ordinary laboring classes and operatives.
The edges ofnmy lambrequins or fixed curtains may be ornamented with cord or gimp, or with figures worked in the flock, and for this purpose the colors may be stenciled on in any adhesive glue or gum and then coated with the flock, said flock being ground or finely cut wool, silk or other fine and handsome fibers. The whole surface of said lambrequins or fixed curtains should be covered with said flock in one or more colors, and in the desired figures or plain.
Vhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent as a new article of manufacture The lambrequin or fixed window curtain of buckram or other material covered in the manner specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature this fourteenth day of May GIBBONS L. KELTY.
