FIRE-ESCAPE.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 285,740, dated September 25, 1883.
To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, EMIL O. EYL, of J efferson City, in the county of Jefferson and Territory of Montana, have invented a new and Improved Fire-Escape, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to that class of fireescapes in which a flexible ladder. is lowered from awindow; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinaftermore fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate crresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a front view of part of a building provided with my improved fire-escape, the same being shown in perspective and adheld against the wall of a building as it is when not in use.
A frame, A, made of iron or steel bars, is pivoted to eyebolts B, projecting from the wall such a distance below the sill of a window that when the frame is held against the wall rest on a projection, F, of the wall a short distanee below the frame when the said frame is lowered. A chainladder, rope ladder, or other flexible ladder, G, is secured to the outer edge bar of the frame A. A latch, H, or other suitble catch, is pi voted to the window-sill for holding the frame raised, as shown in Fig. 2. When the fire-escape is not in use, the lad- Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional ele-, vation of the fire-escape, showing the same Application filed April 4, 1883. (No model.)
der G is folded and held within the frame A, which is held up against the wall, as shown in Fig. 2.
When the fire-escape is to be used, the frame A is released and permitted to swing down, the chains D holding it in position. The brace-rod E is pivoted in such a manner that it cannot swing outward sufficiently to hang down vertically when the frame A is swung down, but will pass down to the projection F, on which 5 5 its end rests, and thereby it braces the frame A and assists the chains D in holding it in pos ition. When the frame is swung down, the flexible ladder will unfold, and the free end will pass down to the ground or to a like fire escape at the next window below, the persons fleeing from the fire step on the balcony, formed by the frame and netting, and then descend by means of the ladder.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a fire-escape, the combination, with the frame A, hinged to the wall, of the chains D, the brace-rod E, the projection F on the wall, and the flexible ladder G, secured to the frame, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a fire-escape, the combination, with the frame A, hinged to the wall, of the chains D, the brace-rod E, the projection F on the wall, the flexible ladder G, secured to the frame, and the catch H,- substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a fire-escape, the combination, with the 80 frame A, curved upward at its outer end, which frame is hinged to the wall, of the flexible ladder G, attached to the said frame, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
EMIL O. EYL.
