I FIRE ESCAPE. No. 323,288. Patented J 1Ll 2 8, l 85..
ETERS, PmwLnhc n n-n Washington. D. c;
NITED STATES MARY A. ARROWSMITH, OF FREEHOLD, NE? JERSEY.
FIRE-ESCAPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 323,288, dated July 28,1885.
Application filed July 31, 1884.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARY A. ARROWSMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Freehold, in the county of Monmouth and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvementsin Fire-Escapes,of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a portable fire-escape consisting 01' a ladder which may be rolled up and placed out of the way when not in use, and yet is readily accessible when required for use.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction of the ladder itself, and in the man ner of attaching and arranging it, as hereinafter particularly described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lrepresents a front view of a building with my improved fire-escape attached and in position for use. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6 are detail views.
The ladder has its sides composed of chains A, formed of ordinary links, a, and the rounds of the ladder consist of rods B, bent so that each end passes through one or preferably two of the links and is bent backward and clinched, so as to form a loop or eye, and thus secure it to the links. By this means a ladder is formed which can be rolled up or laid in layers, so as to be out of the way when not in use and readily accessible when required. The ladder thus formed is attached either to the inside wall or to the floor-beams of a building under the window-sill by means of a ring carried by a bolt, which may be passed inward through the wall or upward through the floor-beams.
As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and at the windows of the two lower stories of the building (No model.)
represented in Figs. 1 and 2, the bolt 0 is 0 passed horizontally inward through the wall D with a ring, 0, at its inner end, for attachment of the ladder, and a closet or locker, E, is provided under the window-sill for holding the ladder when not in use.
As shown in Fig. 4, and at the window of the upper story of the building in Figs. 1 and 2, the bolt 0 is passed vertically upward through the floor-beam G, and the locker is provided beneath the floor for holding the ladder when rolled or folded away and not in use.
In practice it is intended that each ladder shall be of sufficientlength to reach the ground from whatever story of a building it may be connected with.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a fire escape, the combination of a fiexi- 6v ble ladderhaving its sides composed of chains A, consisting of links a, and its rounds con1- posed of rods 13, having each end of each round embracing two of said links, a bolt or bolts, 0, passi ng through the wall or floor-beam and provided with a book of ring for attachment of the upper end of the ladder, and a closet or locker arranged in the wall or floor beneath the windowsill and inclosing the inner end of said bolt, substantially as shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 9th day of May, 1884.
MARY A. ARROWVSMITH.
In presence of K. M. SUPPLE, E. L. SMITH.
