FIRE-ESCAPE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 279,186, dated June 1?, 1883.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, THOMAS WALTON RIoK- ER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and 'useful Improvements in Fire-Escapes, of which. the following is a specification.

My invention relates to that class of fire-escapes which are portable, the object being to so construct the same that it may be located in any room near the window, the whole apparatus being inclosed in a box which takes up but little room, the apparatus being always accessible and made available by simply throwing one part out of the window, the other parts being already fastened within the room. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in

Figure 1 is an inside view of awindow with the escape thrown out ready for use. Fig. 2 is an outside view of the same and the upper part of the ladder. Fig. 3 is a plan of the box and partitions. Fig. 4 is an inside view of the box with ladder and ropes stowed away, the cover being removed. Fig. 5 is an outside view of box. Fig. 6 is asection of the escape bag. Fig. 7 is a view of the under side of step, showing buttons and chains. Figs. 8, 9, and 10 represent details.

My device consists mainly in a chain-ladder, A, which is shown ready for use iii-Fig. 2 and folded up within the case B, Fig. 4.

O .0, Figs. 1 and 2, are man-ropes, to be used, in connection with the ladder A, as safeguards. These man-ropes are each provided with some suitable fastening device, so that it may be readily connected to hooks, as shown at O C, Fig. 1. v

I D, Figs. 1 and 6, is a canvas bag, whic may be raised and lowered by a rope, D, as

vice being of such a nature that the case may shown in Fig. 1, which may, if desired, be also used as one of the manropes. This bag will be found very useful for saving clothing or other valuables.

E E, Fig. 3, represents two screw-eyebolts, which pass through the box B and into some suitable wall fixture, so as to form substantial holdingbolts for the upper end of the ladderchains, which are always attached.

My chain-ladder is constructed as follows:

a a. are wooden step-pieces, connected by four chains, two at each end, as shown in Fig. 7. These chains pass through the steps, which are secured to the chains by'means of buttonpieces H, (see Figs. 7, 8, and 10,) thebutton-pieces H being provided with slots H, in which the chain rests, and is confined by a small pin, h.

The casing B, Figs. 3, 4:, and 5, may be made an ornamental and useful piece of furniture, to be used as a seat, although it is firmly attached to the floor or walls of the apartment in which it is placed, the attaching de:

6 be readily removed when desirable.

In case there are feeble persons or children to be saved, the bag D can be used for that purpose, as they may be placed within it and safely lowered to the ground. 7

I claim as my invention In a fire-escape, the combination of the case B, securely attached to the walls or floor of the room, with the chain ladder A, provided with step-pieces a a, buttons H, and pin 71, 7 substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
