SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,459, dated July 27,

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDRICK A. BAKER, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire-Escape Ladders, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide ladders for the use of firemen which can be readily secured to the windows of buildings from story to story to form a fire-escape.
The construction and operation will be more particularly described hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings,wherein Figure l is a perspective view of the ladder, and Fig. 2vis a top view of one ladder-hook.

A is the ladder, fitted at one end with hooks a a, which are adapted by their shape for taking hold upon a window-sill.
Upon each side of theladder, near the upper end, is fitted a rigid arm, b, which arms, when the ladder is suspended from a window, will bear uponthe wall of the building and retain the ladder out from the wall free from obstructions. The ladder suspended in this manner is firmly held, and the top is level with the sill, so that it is easy to pass from the window to the ladder.
The hooks a, are formed at their outer ends with pointed projections a, having beveled edges, as shown, so that they may enter between slats of blinds or act as wedges to break and split open blinds when the ladder is allowed to fall against the blind. The hooks a also are provided with arms 1), adapted to engage over and inside the window-sill.
Upon the upper end of the ladder is fitted a staple, c, for receiving a hook that carries a pulley, t", and rope, by which rope and pulley a second ladder can be hoisted to the top of the first by persons on the ground, while a man at the top handles the ladder and hooks it to the window above. This may be readily done by the operator first strapping himself to the lower ladder and using both hands to guidethe second one as it is raised, and by these means the ladders are carried irom story to story as high as required. There is also attached to the upper round of ladderA arope, d, which is for use for holding timid persons or for lowering goods.
A set of ladders constructed as described forms a useful and convenient apparatus for use at fires. The ladder for each story being short and light, they may be readily handled and putin place, and long unwieldy ladders dispensed with.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a fire-escape ladder, the arm a, with the beveled projections to and parts I), to engage over and inside the window-sill, in combination with the arms I), all constructed and arranged substantially as shown and described.
