MEMORANDUM-BOOK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 285,618, dated September 25, 1883. Application filed April 23, 1883. (No model.) i 7 To aZZ whom) it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD A. HEMPHILL, of Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Imwhich similar letters of reference indicate cor responding parts in both the figures.

The memorandum-book A is provided with the covers B in the usual manner,;and along the back of the book--that is, along the joint of the covers-a pencil-pocket, O, is formed, which is outside of the backthat is,.it is not between the back of the book proper and the back of the cover, but the back of the cover is between the-back of the book properand the pocket 0. Preferably both covers are made in one piece, and the pocket is formed by stitches a short distance from the back, and the book is then pasted to the covers. The pencil in the pocket stiffcns the book and prevents it from being doubled over or bent, and does not interfere with using the book and turning the leaves, and is entirely out of the way when not in use.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A memorandum-book having its covers stitched to each other a short distance from the back, forming a pencil-pocket along the back of the book, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination, with two book-covers stitched to each other a short distance from the back, thereby forming a pencil-pocket, of a book held between and secured to the covers in such a manner that the pencil-pocket will be along the back of the book, substantially as shown and described.
