M-M* @weefsel-f UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD F. ROBINSON, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
BRICK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 285,808, dated September 18, 1883.
Application tiled May 3, 1883.
i hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of thisspecication.
My invention relates to animprovement in bricks; and it consists in forming the brick with a recess and a supporting-liange on one side, whereby plastering or stucco, which may. be applied to a wall composed of such brick, will be caused to adhere firmly thereto, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a section of a wall composed of such bricks with the plastering applied thereto.
` Fig. 3 is a section through the brick with a mold for ibrming them;
A represents a brick, which has arecess, B, formed in one of itssides, on the outer side of which recess is a flange, C, which projects up a suitable distance.
In coating brick walls with plastering, cenient, or stucco great difficulty has been experienced in causing it to adhere to the wall,
and to remedy this is the obj ectv of my invention.
The plastering will be applied directly to the sideof 'the brick and smoothed in the ordinary way, and a portion of it will be caused (No model.)
to be pressed in between the recess formed between each of the bricks and the one adjacent, thereto, as shown in Fig. 2, and when it becomes hardened nothing less than ashock sufcient to break through the iiange of the brick lease its hold upon the wall and become detached therefrom.
Bricks formed after my design can be mad in molds in the ordinary way without additional cost, the only addition necessary to the mold being the tongue D, as represented in Fig. 3. p
I am aware that bricks have been made heretofore which are provided with a series of small holes in their outer sides for the plaster to catch in, and this I disclaim. I am also aware that bricks have been made with dovetail grooves along their center edges, and this I also disclaim. My invention differs from both of these in forming the recess in which the plastering is to catch at the top edge of the brick, and in forming a supporting-surface, C, for the plastering to catch upon.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- A` brick having a longitudinal recess, B, formed along its upper edge, and provided with a bearing-flange, C, outside of the recess, substantially as shown and described.
- or plastering will cause the plastering to re- In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
