PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS e. F. DoLBr, or DULWlOH, ENGLAND.
MEANS FOR cLosme CANS.
. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 284,398, dated September 4, 1883.
Application filed July 20, 1883. (No model.) Patented in England February 13, 1863, No. 782.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS GEORGE FON- NEREAU DOLBY, of Dulwich, England, manufacturer, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Means of Closing Cans or Receptacles for Meat, Fish, Butter, Concentrated Milk, or other Substances, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to hermetically close cans or other receptacles so that they can be opened without cutting; and the invention consists of the combination, with a flanged cover-,whioh rests on ashoulder in the mouth of the can, and said can of an annular ring having a horizontal flange to bear on the head of the can, and a n-shaped portion, which is placed over and clamps together the top edge ofthe can and the flange of the cover.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of a can suitable for my 'inven-.
tion. Fig. 2 is avertical section of the flanged cover. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the clamping ring or hoop; Fig. 4, a vertical section, and Fig. 5 a plan of the can with the cover and the hoop in place.
For the purpose of my invention I form around the inside of the'can a (which preferably tapers slightly from top to bottom) a shoulder, b, at about, say, one-fourth of an inch from the top or mouth. The part from the top to the shoulder bis also by preference slightly tapered. Within the mouthl place, so as to rest upon the shoulder b, acover, 0,
having its edge turned up in the form of a flange, d, the height of which is about equal to the distance between the shoulder 12 and the top or edge of the can. The edge of the can and the edge. of the flange are thus flush with each other, or nearly so.
The flange d is likewise slightly tapered.
Over or upon the edges of the can and of the flange d, so as to embrace them and hold them together, I- place a ring or hoop, e, of tin or other suitable material, havinga clamp= ing portion in section the form of a narrow inverted gutter or U-thus, nand a lateral flange to rest on the can-head, as before stated.
I pinch the sides of this hoop all around against the upper part of the can and against the flange d of the cover, respectively, where by the cover is securely held in place and the joint between it and the can hermetically closed.
When it is required to open the can, a few with a portion having a nshaped section to embrace the margin of the receptacle, and the flange d, and a lateral flange to rest on the cover, substantially as set forth.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
. THOMAS G. F. DOLBY.- Witnesses:
